Are there heated insoles? Heated insoles: types, principle of operation. DIY warming insoles. Overview of store options

Freezing feet in winter is a very pressing problem for the cold regions of our country. In addition to being unpleasant, cold feet can have a significant impact on human health, especially for people who engage in active winter sports, enjoy hiking and traveling to colder parts of the world. Everyone struggles with the problem in their own way. Some people wear several layers of socks, some choose warmer shoes, and some don’t go outside at all in winter. But there is a more elegant and simpler way - heated insoles. Let's see what they are, how to use them and how to choose them.

Read in the article

What are heated insoles for and who might benefit from them?

They are mainly used by people for whom prolonged exposure to the cold is important. These are winter sports athletes, tourists, fishermen and hunters. But such insoles can also be used every day - on winter trips to work or school.

Heated ski boot insoles

The success of an athlete largely depends on how convenient and comfortable he feels in his equipment. Excessive clothing restricts movement and adds weight, which has a negative impact on overall mobility. Therefore, heated insoles are an excellent solution for ski boots. They do not require the use of several layers of socks, perfectly warm the feet and, accordingly, improve blood circulation in the lower extremities.

For fishing

Anyone who has ever sat with a fishing rod near a river bank knows that the key to good fishing is patience. In order to get out of the pond, you need to sit in one position for a long time - both in wet autumn and cold winter.

It is natural that the legs, being without movement, freeze faster. Warming foot insoles are simply the ideal solution for any fisherman. Especially for those who love winter fishing.

For hunting

By analogy with fishermen, hunters also have to sit still for a long time. And the weather can be completely different. But most often the process occurs at night in autumn or winter. Battery-powered heated insoles will help keep you warm on long walks in the snow or in an ambush on an autumn morning.

Main types of heated insoles

Nowadays you can find two types of insoles on the market. Some use a classic battery for heating, others are based on a chemical reaction.

On battery

The principle of operation of such insoles is simple. They use a simple heating element from an external power source. In our case - from the battery. The battery is charged from. Typically it takes 3 hours to fully charge the battery. And the insole can work from 6 to 12 hours.

The insole itself is made of a material that retains heat, does not allow moisture to pass through, and is flexible enough to adapt to a person’s foot. Various models of heated insoles can be equipped with a control panel or powered not by a battery, but by replaceable batteries. Thus, it turns out that these are reusable warming insoles for feet.

Chemical

The work of chemical insoles is based on reactions occurring inside them. To activate, you need to open the package so that the insoles are exposed to the open air. In saline-based chemical heating pads, you need to break the stem. These insoles can warm up for 6 hours.

The average heating temperature can be from 36 to 40°C. Due to the fact that chemical components are used for heating, such insoles are a disposable solution. Once the chemical reaction has expired, they stop heating. On average, heated chemical insoles can be purchased for 50 rubles.

All the advantages and disadvantages of heated insoles

Of course, considering the disadvantages and advantages of insoles in isolation from specific models is very subjective. But they still have common features and characteristics. The main advantage of all heated insoles can be considered autonomous heat in the shoes. Electronic ones allow you to use heating for a long time; after discharging, you can charge them again or change the batteries. However, the shape and structure impose a limitation on shoe size. Due to the fact that a heating element, battery and control unit must be placed inside the insole, their physical dimensions are much larger than usual. In addition, the battery tends to discharge at low negative temperatures. Chemical insoles are completely autonomous and do not depend on energy. However, chemical elements do not last forever and can be used a limited number of times. Usually this is a one-time warm-up for 6 hours. With this type of insoles, it is difficult to control the heating: depending on external factors, the insoles may not warm up to a comfortable temperature or, conversely, suddenly heat up to a burning state. But chemical models are more convenient and comfortable, since they do not contain large blocks. In addition, you can buy disposable heated insoles much cheaper than their reusable counterparts.

The principle of design and operation of electrically heated insoles

Inside the insole there are usually several basic components hidden: a battery for power, a control unit and a heating element. Complex devices with a control panel may additionally contain an antenna. All this fits in a fairly thin insole. The heating element, receiving a charge from the battery, heats up and transfers heat to the leg. That's the whole principle of how the insole works. Craftsmen have already tried to replicate the technology, and many have posted ways to make heated insoles on the Internet. However, the process is very labor-intensive and requires at least basic knowledge and the availability of components for assembly, which sometimes in China are cheaper in ready-made form than separately here. Therefore, it’s better to leave creating DIY battery-powered heated insoles to electronics enthusiasts and techies. Chemical options can either work in a one-time mode, or they will need to be heated in water to recharge.

How to choose the right insoles and what to pay attention to

You need to choose heated insoles based on how they will be used. For example, for rare walks or forays into cold climates, you can use inexpensive disposable models. Your feet have warmed up, the action is over - and you can throw them away and put new ones in your shoes.

Chemical reusable insoles are suitable for short but regular walks. For example, every day for one or two hours. After this, they can be warmed up in hot water, and they will be ready for the next walk again. This option will cost a little more than disposable ones, but cheaper than reusable ones.

Thermal insoles for electrically heated shoes are often more expensive. But at the same time they are more convenient, have greater potential and functionality. They are worth choosing when you need to spend a long time in the cold regularly. The average operating time of insoles usually ranges from 6 to 12 hours. Once completely discharged, they can be recharged or the batteries can be replaced, depending on the model. Thus, this is the most convenient option for regular use, but at the same time it is also more expensive.

Main companies and brands of electric insoles for battery-powered shoes

There are many companies that produce this type of product. From Chinese, heated insoles from which you can order from AliExpress, to more serious developers producing reliable and high-quality devices.

ThermaCell heated insoles

One of the most famous manufacturers of electrically heated insoles. The most famous are two types of insoles - with a built-in battery and with a replaceable one. Both types have a control panel with which you can set the mode or turn off the insoles altogether. A simpler option with a non-removable battery can be bought for 7,000 rubles, and an option with replaceable batteries will cost about 15,000 - 17,000 rubles. You can also purchase a car charger separately for 1,500 rubles.

Blazewear

Blazewear has two main types of insoles. Some run on 3 AA batteries, which last for about 5 hours. The battery packs are placed on the leg using Velcro, which is not always convenient. This option costs 2000 rubles.

The second model involves the use of 3000 mAh lithium-polymer batteries. They should be enough for 4-7 hours of continuous operation. The kit also includes battery packs. Thus, by alternating between charged batteries and batteries, you can extend the operating time up to 11 hours. The inconvenience lies in attaching the blocks to the leg. Blazewear battery-powered heated insoles can be purchased for 5,000 rubles.

DiClime

DiClime sells one type of warm heated insoles for shoes, which can be purchased for 1,500 rubles. The device is powered by lithium polymer batteries. The maximum stated operating time is 8 hours. The battery is built-in and cannot be removed. The shape of the insole is made in such a way that it can be trimmed and adjusted to any shoe. The model has , on the basis of which the element is heated.

RedLaika

The brand specializes not only in insoles, but also in heated clothing in general. They have jackets, socks, pants, long johns, and more. But we are interested in the insoles. In fact, the brand has only one model. It’s just that the starting equipment may be different. The simplest version of self-heating reusable insoles with blocks for AA batteries will cost 1000 rubles. Three batteries can power the insole in heating mode for up to 4 hours. A drawback may be the mechanism for attaching the battery pack to the leg.

The version with batteries included will cost much more - 6,000 rubles. The battery capacity is 2600 mAh, according to the developers they should be enough for 5-21 hours of operation.

"Siberian"

Domestic insoles from the Novosibirsk company “Special Thermal Systems”. The base price is 1500 rubles. The insoles are simple, with an external USB cable. Any compatible battery can be used. You can buy ready-made kits right away for 4,000 and 4,300 rubles. Both include a complete kit with a battery. However, the second one also has a special case for wearing on the belt.

Review of insoles from Aliexpress

Here's what I needed:

  • felt insoles - 2 pcs.,
  • nichrome wire - 60 cm,
  • MGTF wire (not important) 0.2 (mm. kV) about - 3 m.,
  • battery compartment for 4 batteries - 2 pcs.,
  • three-position switch - 2 pcs.,
  • mini jack connector - 2 sets (socket + plug),
  • crimp sleeve 0.2 (mm. sq.) - 4 pcs.,
  • heat shrink tube - 1 m.,
  • strips of fabric with Velcro fastening,
  • hot glue.

How heated insoles work

I will explain the principle of operation of the entire circuit. As a heater, I took a nichrome thread with a diameter of 0.2 mm and a length of 25.5 cm. The resistance of such a segment was 8.9 Ohms. The circuit provides two modes of operation: from two or from three batteries. In dual battery mode, the insoles will be constantly warm.

When working from three, the nichrome will be hot, but don’t be afraid, there will be no discomfort from this. Before installation, I advise you to do a test run in both modes. It is done simply: you need to take a nichrome thread connected to a power source and put it in a light cloth (a handkerchief folded in half). Hold this fabric between your hands for a minute.

If it’s hot, then the heater should be longer, and if it doesn’t heat well, we should shorten it. This way you will be sure that your heated insoles will not become toasty insoles. The calculated current when operating from two batteries or batteries will be approximately 270 mA, and from three - 400 mA. Knowing the capacity of your batteries, you can approximately calculate the operating time of homemade heated insoles.

I attached a 0.2 mm MGTF wire to the nichrome. sq. using crimp sleeves. You need to put the sleeve on the nichrome, then its end is inserted into the stripped multi-core MGTF. A sleeve is pulled into place at their junction and crimped. I used a special crimping tool, but you can do it with pliers. I took the wires so long that their length from the insole was 50 cm... Just right for my shoes.

Regarding how to place the heater on the insole. I decided that since I don’t get cold in my heels, the main task is to keep warm in the forefoot. The photo shows the styling form that I use. Experience has shown that the decision was correct.

Using neat stitches, I secured the heater in the desired pattern on the insole.

I sewed the MGTF wires to the side of the insole, stretched heat shrink over the remainder, and soldered the ends to the plug. The insole is ready.

The battery compartment had to be redesigned to fit my circuit. I allocated one cell for a switch and a mini jack socket. I re-soldered everything according to the diagram. Afterwards, I filled it all with hot glue.

The remaining cells should be signed, since, as can be seen from the diagram, there is a difference in which cell will be empty - the first or third. The batteries are protected from falling out by a simple rubber band. This is not a deep design, but the lack of battery compartments with a lid in the magazine.

How to choose heated insoles

Before you buy heated insoles, there are a few key things to consider:

  1. Before purchasing, it is important to find out about all the details, look at the photo on the website and carefully read the packaging: are there any errors in the name, what country is the manufacturer. This will help avoid counterfeits, which have recently begun to appear more and more often.
  2. Who will use heated earbuds? Some manufacturers have different colors for women's and men's models.
  3. It is preferable if, in addition to the electric insoles, there are replaceable batteries, a charging device or removable batteries.
  4. Good heating pads should be charged 500 to 700 times.

Do-it-yourself heated insoles will be a good find for people who, due to circumstances, are forced to stay outside for a long time in winter. This simple device will help keep your feet warm when fishing, hunting, hiking, market sellers, etc. In addition to the cold season, insoles will come in handy in spring and even summer, in rainy weather.

One of the parts of the body that is sensitive to cold is the feet. If they freeze, the whole body begins to freeze, which causes us great discomfort, not to mention the risk of catching a cold. Heated insoles will help keep you warm in severe frosts.

There is nothing fancy about heated insoles. Depending on the type of product, the operating principle will differ. The products are made of several layers:

  • bottom layer - insulating material in the lower part, which retains heat well and does not allow moisture to pass through;
  • then there is a pressure sensor, a connector for a charger, a battery and electronic elements, a heating element is located in the toes or all over the foot;
  • the penultimate layer is a polyurethane absorbent and synthetic insulating layer;
  • The last layer is a non-fabric lining.

High-quality heated insoles should distribute heat evenly over the entire foot and follow its shape. It is advisable to have perforations in the toe area. Thanks to it, they will warm up faster.

Insoles often have heating mode indicators. Can be powered by regular or rechargeable batteries. The design of the products is made in such a way that they are very easy to put into shoes, and several size options allow you to choose individual insoles for each person.

Types of heated insoles

There are three types of “warm” insoles: rechargeable, battery-powered and chemical. The first two types have a heating element in their design and are divided into wired and wireless.

Wired

The insoles have an external battery and a heating element inside the structure itself. Even if this is your first time using such a thing, you will not notice any discomfort while wearing it; your leg will quickly get used to it.

The battery and the heating element are connected to each other by a 40-60 cm wire. The batteries themselves are attached to the shin, and the temperature mode is changed using the control panel. Despite the fact that the main element is located outside, there is no risk of injury. All live wires are hidden in a plastic, tightly closed box.

Wired insoles can work for a maximum of 12 hours, which is quite enough to spend the required amount of time in the cold or in cold water. You can make battery-powered heated insoles with your own hands, and they will turn out no worse than the purchased version.

Wireless

In such insoles, the batteries are placed inside the product, most often in the heel area. The heating element is located in the toes, because... They are the ones who start to freeze first. Specially selected materials allow heat to be retained inside the insole: artificial plastic and natural rubber.

If you prefer wireless heated insoles, then immediately select your size taking into account your height, because... It is not possible to “tailor” the product to suit you. The operating time of the insoles is also quite long - up to 11 hours, with 4 hours until fully charged. Some models are equipped with a remote control. This allows you to turn them off when you enter the room.

Chemical

Another type of heated insoles is chemical. Mostly produced disposable. Sold in hermetically sealed bags. To make them work, you need to shake or rub each insole with your palms after printing. This will start a chemical reaction. After the insoles begin to heat up, they are inserted into the shoes. There are models that can be glued to socks using self-adhesive tape located on one side.

Heating of the insole occurs due to the oxidation of iron. To avoid burns, manufacturers add sodium chloride and salt, which reduce the oxidation process. Some products also add sawdust or charcoal to eliminate odor and moisture.

Chemical insoles are designed to last 6-7 hours. They heat up no more than 45 0 C. For a short walk this is quite enough.

Advantages and disadvantages of wireless insoles

Heated insoles have both their pros and some cons. The advantages of the products include:

  • keep feet warm even in severe frosts;
  • wireless insoles can be adjusted to size;
  • chemical products have children's sizes;
  • adjustment of temperature and heating modes;
  • fast charging from a regular network;
  • comfortable to wear;
  • can be turned off upon entering the building.

The disadvantages of insoles are as follows:

  • not all budget models are able to retain heat for a long time;
  • the high position of the heel in wireless insoles gives the feeling as if you are on a heel;
  • in battery models you have to attach the battery to your leg;
  • there is a risk of the wire breaking or breaking at the most inopportune moment.

After weighing all the pros and cons, you yourself make the decision to purchase “warm” insoles. If you don’t want to waste money, you can make heated insoles for fishing or just walking with your own hands from scrap materials.

Instructions for making homemade heated insoles with your own hands

How to make heated insoles with your own hands? Everything is very simple. To make heated insoles, it is important to pay attention to the selection of materials so that heat loss below is minimal and heat transfer to the feet is maximum. You will need materials and tools such as:

  • a pair of felt insoles;
  • material for the front layer of the insole (you can take genuine leather, denim, leatherette);
  • nichrome wire approximately 60-70 cm;
  • battery case (4 compartments);
  • batteries;
  • switch for 2 or 3 modes;
  • MGTF wire 4 m;
  • crimp sleeve S = 0.2 mm 2 4 pcs;
  • set of socket and plug 2 pcs;
  • heat-resistant tube 1.5-2 m;
  • strips of fabric Velcro;
  • pliers.

The manufacturing process at home consists of simple steps that even a non-professional can perform.

  1. Using crimp sleeves, the MGTF wire is attached to the nichrome wire. First, the sleeve is put on the wire, the end of which is then inserted into the cleaned wire. The joint is covered with a sleeve, which is then crimped. The wire should protrude no less than 50 cm beyond the insole for convenient attachment to the foot. The wire on the insole is arranged in any order, as you prefer. You can attach it using thread and a needle.
  2. A plug from the headphones is soldered to the free end of the wire to connect the insoles for recharging. The hanging stranded wire is sewn to the side of the insole approximately to the middle.
  3. The upper part of the insole is cut out of a piece of leather and applied to a felt base with wire.
  4. Now the arrangement of the battery is underway. A plug socket is mounted in one of the four compartments in the battery housing.
  5. There is Velcro on the back of the battery compartment. Two batteries are inserted from the front side. In this case, the heating temperature will not exceed 35 0 C. If this is not enough, you can insert a third battery.

Thus, in just an hour you can make battery-powered heated insoles with your own hands and feel comfortable in any weather.

The nuances of making heated insoles for fishing

Homemade heated insoles for use on fishing must be made taking into account environmental conditions. If there is a risk of water getting into your shoes, the insoles should be waterproof. All wires must be carefully hidden inside. It is better to make wireless insoles so as not to get the batteries on your feet wet. Switching modes should also be convenient. It would be better if it was a remote control. Then, even while wading waist-deep in water, you will be able to regulate the heating temperature.

Features of using heated insoles

Using homemade products is more than easy. The main thing in the product is that it fits the size of your shoes, otherwise it will fidget inside. Follow the rules for using insoles so that they serve you for a long time:

  • the integrity of the protective casing must not be damaged;
  • wet the products;
  • bend insoles;
  • stretch, press the wire;
  • dry immediately upon arrival home.

Charge your wireless insoles in a timely manner so that you don’t suddenly find yourself without a heating pad when outdoors.

The cold season is fraught with frequent colds due to frequent hypothermia of the legs. Today, this problem can be solved by a technical solution such as heated insoles. It is enough to place them in your shoes instead of regular insoles and enjoy the warmth all the time you are in the cold. This know-how has been used in skiing for quite a long time - you put it in ski boots and enjoy a comfortable ride. But ordinary people relatively recently adopted a convenient device that allows them to forget about freezing feet, colds and various chronic diseases.

Smart insoles Winter+

A relatively new development with surface heating up to +45ºС. It is noteworthy that for their mass production, funds were raised through the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. More precisely, these heated insoles for shoes were already being produced, but in order to expand the sales market, it was decided to attract additional investments through Kickstarter.

The great popularity of the model is due to a number of advantages:

  • Heating is carried out exclusively during movement - by entering a vehicle or into a room, you can save energy and additional hours of work;
  • The heating mode is controlled via the Android application supplied in the kit;
  • Operation is powered by a battery that needs to be charged after five hours of wireless device operation;
  • Resistant to moisture, which ensures reliable operation in all weather conditions.

The +Winter set, consisting of two insoles and one charger, costs $97, but due to the fact that this configuration requires charging each insole one at a time, a set of two insoles and two chargers is available for sale for $117.

In fact, their price is currently very high. In addition, other manufacturers are not standing still and have been producing insoles with similar technologies for several years now, which are much cheaper. Below we will look at a couple of examples.

Chemical insoles

Insoles called “Heat Generator” are a device that allows you to heat your feet in conditions where there is no possibility of using a battery or accumulator - during long hiking trips, outdoor recreation, fishing, etc.

Characterized by the following features:

  • Provide heating for 6 hours to a temperature of 36 to 40ºС;
  • To use, just open the package and take them out into the open air, where heat will begin to be released due to the chemical process;
  • Made from safe, non-toxic materials that meet safety regulations;
  • Two size options - 22cm for shoes from sizes 33 to 38 and 25cm for shoes from sizes 39 to 45.

The cost of a chemical shoe warmer varies depending on the number of pairs purchased - from 5 to 9 - $3.17; from 10 to 19 – $2.25; from 20 to 95 – $1.58 per pair. Intended for single use only.

Battery powered insoles

The Therm-ic Perform is an electric, battery-powered boot warmer that has already become an integral part of the equipment of well-known ski and snowboard boot manufacturers such as Atomic, Salomon and Burton. In order to heat your shoes with Therm-ic Perform insoles, just install them instead of the usual ones and connect them through a special cord to the battery.

The system allows for continuous temperature support in domestic climatic conditions from – 25 ºС throughout the entire day of skiing. The feeding element can be secured both on the outer part of the boot and on the belt; the only limitation in the location is the length of the supply cord.

The Therm-ic Perform insoles cost $22.50 per pair.

SIDAS - battery-powered insoles from a well-known French manufacturer, which has prioritized the comfort of wearing shoes in any sport. This model with an electric heater was developed at the Podiatech medical research center using orthopedic structures and elements that ensure correct foot placement and effective functioning of the athlete’s musculoskeletal system during training or competitions. And since the thickness of SIDAS does not exceed the thickness of a regular boot accessory, they can be easily used for warmth in everyday shoes, especially since the cost of the insoles is only $36.67 per pair.

Thanks to heated insoles, a person will not have any problems during the cold season. At the same time, he does not have to worry about any cataclysms or negative consequences - the power of the electric heater is absolutely safe for human life, and chemical models do not have any harmful effects. Therefore, you can safely put them in your shoes and forget about freezing feet at any temperature and in any situation.
