DIY homemade double bed. We make a bed out of wood with our own hands. Required drawings and documentation

A DIY double bed is a completely feasible project for DIYers. Making a bed with your own hands allows you not only to avoid unnecessary waste, but also to realize any design idea. You can make a bed, taking into account the characteristics of the owners and the bedroom, and choose any length and width.

How to determine the size of a bed?

To understand how to make a double bed yourself, you first need to decide on its size. The standard length of the product is considered to be 200 cm. However, this parameter varies in the range of 190-220 cm. To determine the appropriate size of the bed, you need to add 30 cm to the person’s height.

The minimum is 160 cm. There is no upper limit, but there are standards. They are:

  1. 160 cm;
  2. 180 cm;
  3. 200 cm;
  4. 220 cm.

To determine a comfortable width, you need to lie down, put your hands on your chest and straighten your elbows. You need to measure the distance from one elbow to the other and add 10-20 cm.

Another important factor is height. If there is a need for additional storage space, you should pay attention to a bed with drawers. However, it is never low due to design features. Height can be:

  • small, 20-30 cm;
  • medium, 40-60 cm;
  • large, 70-90 cm.

You should choose the one that is comfortable to sit on. You also need to take into account the presence of diseases of the musculoskeletal system and the person’s age.

When drawing up a diagram or drawing of a sleeping place, it is necessary to take into account all the individual characteristics of the owner.

Materials for work

The process of making a double bed largely depends on the choice of materials. You can make a bed from the following materials:

  1. wood;
  2. gland.

A wooden stock is easier to make because the process is quite simple. To make a bed frame from metal, you need to have skills in working with a welding machine and, if necessary, forging.

For working with metal

To work with metal you will need the following materials:

  • corners;
  • bolts and nuts;
  • profile pipe;
  • plate;

All elements are connected by welding.

For working with wood

A do-it-yourself wooden bed can be made from the following materials:

  1. laminated chipboard;
  2. solid wood;
  3. laminated timber.

A wooden bed is easier to process and you can add any pattern to the headboard or side panels (tsars).

For a pine bed you will need the following materials:

  • timber 5x5 cm, length 220 cm – 15 pcs.;
  • board 200x10x2 cm – 22 pcs.;
  • wood glue or PVA;
  • self-tapping screws 6.5x4 cm;
  • metal corners with a shelf width of 5 cm.

The frame is intended for a mattress measuring 200x160 cm.

Necessary accessories and fasteners

To make a bed with your own hands, you need to prepare fasteners and accessories. If the bed is planned to be foldable, you should purchase special folding mechanisms. They can be of the following types:

  1. mechanical;
  2. with springs;
  3. gas.

For stationary products you need to take:

  • metal corners;
  • screeds;
  • screws;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • legs if necessary;
  • lamellas or metal mesh.

To make drawers, you should purchase roller mechanisms. It is better to give preference to metal products, as they are more durable compared to plastic ones.

Tools for work

To do it yourself, you need to prepare the following tools:

  1. Bulgarian;
  2. welding machine;
  3. drill with a set of drills of different diameters;
  4. roulette;
  5. square;
  6. square file;
  7. metal brush;
  8. sandpaper;
  9. paint brushes;
  10. primer for metal surfaces;
  11. paintwork.

Having blacksmithing equipment will allow you to create an unusual pattern for the headboard.

To make a bed out of wood, you need to prepare the following tools:

  • hacksaw;
  • drill;
  • drills of different diameters;
  • screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • wood glue or PVA;
  • clamps;
  • square;
  • screwdriver;
  • tape measure and pencil;
  • iron corners;
  • stain;
  • sandpaper;
  • brushes for painting.

If you plan to make a bed from solid wood, you can use special cutters to create a pattern on the headboard of the bed. A wooden frame can be coated with stain, which will reveal the texture of the material and make the frame more beautiful.

Self-assembly of a double bed

To make a double bed with your own hands, you need to draw up a detailed drawing of the product in advance. It should show all the nuances, the method of connecting the frame elements, and decide on the fittings. The dimensions of the bed parts must be made with an accuracy of 1 cm. Otherwise, the base may be smaller than the mattress. If it turns out to be larger, the mattress will move, which will cause inconvenience when using the bed.

Frame making

If you are planning a structure made of timber, you first need to glue the elements together so that you get:

  1. side panels;
  2. headboard;
  3. foot back.

The surface must be flat, so if necessary, the wood is planed and sanded. Otherwise, the elements will not stick together well. Since the box should have a height of 15-20 cm, it is necessary to fasten 3-4 bars 220 cm long. To do this, the sides of the parts are generously lubricated with glue, overlapped and pressed with clamps. Start only after the glue has dried. This takes 1-2 days.

Since the glued blanks are large, they must be adjusted to the parameters specified in the drawing. You will need side drawers 220 cm long, end panels 161 cm long and a central jumper 210 cm long.

Parts are fixed more securely if you use a locking connection. To do this, measure 5 cm along the edges of the side drawers on the upper bars and saw them off. It is important not to damage the central element, since it will take the load. Then, along the edges of the end sides, 5 cm are measured on the central beam and carefully removed. Now you need to connect the parts of the bed, having previously coated them with glue. The elements are compressed using clamps and left until completely dry.

You can also make a solid frame, the parts of which are attached to each other by means of dressing. The bars are glued into a box already trimmed. To do this, you first need to lay out the bottom row so that you get a rectangle. The lengths of the side and end sides should be 210 and 150 cm, respectively.

The end parts of the beams of the side panels are laid first, which are generously lubricated with glue. They are fixed using self-tapping screws. To prevent the screws from moving to the side, guide holes are made using a drill with a small-diameter drill. Each connection is checked with a square to ensure a 90° angle is maintained. The planes should also be checked, since the tree may move to the side. The length of the bars in it should be 220 cm, and the end part - 170 cm.

The last row to be laid is the top row, the dimensions of which correspond to the bottom. The sides are lubricated with glue and fixed with self-tapping screws. It is necessary to make recesses for the screw heads so that they do not protrude above the surface. The frame is left to dry for 1-2 days.

The central lintel consists of 2 glued beams 210 cm long. Before fixing, markings are made on the inside of the frame. The middle is marked, and thrust elements 15 cm long are attached below in the designated places. They act as a support for the central bar. To connect, 5 cm of the bottom beam is removed from the jumper on each side. This element is attached with glue and fixed with self-tapping screws.

If the bed has legs, they are installed at this stage. Beams 20-30 cm long can act as supports.

Today, many people are concerned about the environmental cleanliness of their living space. Health-safe furniture products, the production of which uses materials of natural origin, are no exception. This question is more relevant for furniture in the bedroom, in particular for the bed, where each of us spends a third of our lives, resting and gaining energy to actively work during the day. Nowadays such beds are purchased in stores, but they are quite expensive, and problems arise with the selection of sizes or design solutions. So, more and more often, many people decide to make such furniture themselves.

Choosing material

How do you make a double bed with your own hands, the drawings and diagrams of which are given in this article? First you need to decide on the materials. The main thing is to purchase MDF, the thickness of which is three centimeters. You will have to cut out individual parts from it so that their texture resembles expensive wood.

In addition to MDF, it is recommended to buy laminate boards. In this case, during installation work you will need nitro glue, while MDF is normally connected with a simple PVA adhesive. This is one of the reasons why professional craftsmen prefer to work only with MDF. It should be noted that purchasing sheets of material at retail prices is not entirely profitable. If there is a furniture factory in the city, it is best to buy sheets with edges prepared for work there. Interior elements can be prepared from wooden boards, two centimeters thick, or multi-layer plywood.

So, in addition to MDF, you will need to buy:

  • sheets of construction plywood (2 x 1.6 m);
  • one and a half meter long board (2 x 10 cm);
  • beams 8 m long (5 x 5 cm);
  • boards 2 m long (4 x 10 cm).

The choice of wood species is at your discretion. But one condition must be met - boards, beams and plywood are purchased edged and planed.

Tools you will need for your work

To avoid difficulties in making bed elements, fitting them and assembling furniture, you must always have the following assistants on hand:

  • a circular saw that is attached to the table;
  • miter saw;
  • hammer and nails;
  • a sander or just a set of sandpaper;
  • construction tape, square, marking pencil;
  • screwdriver;
  • rubber hammer;
  • clamps;
  • sawing sawhorses;
  • socket wrench with a set of removable heads.

Drawings of a double bed with drawers

Here are several options for drawings according to which you can make a bed for two beds:

And this model has a drawer at the head in which you can store bed linen:

Another version with drawers located near the floor:

We detail the future bed

We have decided on the materials and tools; now we need to cut out the elements. If there is no special equipment and sufficient free space, then you should seek help from specialists. Moreover, in an apartment it is quite difficult to achieve rectangular sections when cutting. Since the bed is supposed to have a mattress, a base for it should be made of sixteen-millimeter plywood, the parameters of which are 1.6 by 2 meters. The remaining elements should be manufactured in specified quantities according to certain sizes, according to the developed drawing. From the main parts it is necessary to make the upper and lower base of the podium, the top for the headboard (1 piece), transverse stiffeners (at least three), two rigid transverse ribs, four limiters for the headboard and three racks.

Fasteners required to assemble the bed

Simple fasteners are used to connect individual wooden elements. You can purchase it in a regular store that sells furniture fittings. To make the furniture durable, you should buy self-tapping screws and metal corners with holes:

Selecting a mattress

In most cases, a double bed made on your own ends up being much cheaper in the long run. And the maximum part of the costs is spent on purchasing a mattress. To purchase it, you need to clarify the dimensions of the bed so as not to remodel it or change the mattress, choosing a model that is suitable in size.

To make the crib comfortable, it is not recommended to save money on this element. The mattress must be of high quality and comfortable, and lie correctly on the base.

Many people try to make it, like a bed, on their own. But such work raises certain difficulties, because you want to do it in such a way that the final mattress turns out to be no worse than an orthopedic one that can be purchased in a store. You need to know that a homemade mattress should not be used by people under twenty-five years of age. And if a person experiences problems with the spine, he should definitely choose an orthopedic model in the store, taking into account his weight category, age and height when purchasing.

How to choose a mattress support

When the design solution for making a bed does not include a side, the mattress will most likely fall off it during sleep. On average, such a product weighs about eighty kilograms and is located on a highly sliding surface. This can cause injury and other unfortunate consequences.
In addition, the mattress must be weathered and “breathe”. And a double bed made by yourself most often does not have the space necessary for ventilation under its base.

In such cases, the mattress should be attached to the base of the bed, but not tightly. After all, you will have to change the mattress covers, replace the product with a more comfortable one. In such cases, you should use Velcro for clothing. One side is sewn to the mattress, the other is fixed to the bed using a stapler. To improve ventilation, holes should be drilled with a milling cutter.

Sample instructions on how to make a bed

First, the frame base is prepared. This part of the work is the easiest, because appearance at this stage is not particularly important. All mistakes made in the work can then be easily hidden with decorative finishing.

Now you need to determine the height for the legs (if provided for in the drawings), and add to its data the height of the panel, which is located on the sides. Four pieces of equal length are sawn off from the prepared block. A fastening element is fixed to each of them using self-tapping screws or nails.

If you already have a mattress, you need to measure its width and cut a couple of pieces of board to fit, leaving a small margin. They are fixed into metal fasteners, which are already installed on the legs. The next step is to measure the length of the mattress. Based on the data obtained, we prepare a pair of boards, the length of which is shorter than the mattress board by a value equal to the width of one leg. If the mattress is quite wide, it is recommended to provide an additional support beam in the central part of the frame base. To do this, the distance from the short sidewalls is measured, the board is cut to the required length and inserted into the central part of the base, secured with special metal fasteners.

Boards are attached transversely to a rectangular base, the gaps between which are about five centimeters. With their help, the mattress will be held and additional shock absorption will be created. The length of such boards should match the width of the future bed. They are fastened with screws.

It's time to move on to finishing work. We turn the manufactured frame base upside down. A board intended for finishing is placed along one edge, marked in size and cut. Similar actions are carried out on the second side.

The boards are glued to the frame base using carpentry glue, trimmed along the edges of the legs (top), secured with clamps, and the time required for the adhesive to dry completely is waited.

The edge is mounted on top. To do this, you will need a board whose width is eleven centimeters. It is necessary to cut boards from the workpiece along the length of the sides of the rectangular frame, bevel the ends at an angle equal to forty-five degrees. Small stiffening ribs made from a bar with a cross-section of five by five centimeters are installed on the walls. Everything is secured with glue and nails.

If you want the legs to look aesthetically pleasing, prepare boards that will hide them. Their height should be somewhat less so that the load from the bed does not cause damage. This finish can be secured with glue or self-tapping screws. In this case, you should try to ensure that the fastening points are not noticeable.

Now it's time for the headboard. At the back of each leg we attach boards 5 by 10 cm. Their height exceeds the base, but should not extend beyond the top edge. We grab the boards with clamps and drill holes that should partially go into the legs. We insert the bolts here and tighten them with a wrench, not forgetting the washers. The headboard turns out to be the simplest, in the form of a regular shield, adjusted to the size you need. If you decide to make a bed with a soft headboard, you will have to work a little more, but the task is quite doable.

All that remains is to seal the holes with putty and sand all the elements of the bed. Their surface should be processed until it becomes perfectly smooth. Now you can treat the bed with stain and only then with a varnish composition.

Benefits of a homemade bed

The product is environmentally friendly. After all, the work uses materials of natural origin. The bed is durable and can be used for a long time, withstanding significant loads. It is possible to develop design solutions of various shapes, decorate at your discretion, and decorate the front and back walls with wood carvings. Working independently, you can make a bed of the required size, successfully fitting it into the interior of the room. In addition, there is a good opportunity to save money.

If you want a double bed to fully meet your requirements and not be too expensive, try designing it yourself.
The material for work should be selected so that it can be processed without difficulty and is not too expensive. It will be easier to purchase ready-made sheets and cut out the necessary elements from them, following your drawings.

It is recommended to acquire all the necessary tools. They will help you in your work and will always be useful in the future.

It is best to make a double mattress to extend its service life and give it strength. It is best if each layer is made of materials of different densities - this will provide additional comfort. Try to make the top layer denser. For cladding and padding, use natural materials that do not contain synthetic and chemical additives. Otherwise, there is a high probability of developing an allergic reaction. It is best if the mattress is purchased in a store.

If such work has never been performed, then it is best to place the double bed on a podium made of laminated chipboard. It’s not difficult to make; any novice craftsman can handle the job. There is no need to rack your brains over the design of retractable elements and lifting parts - free space is already provided on the podium.

It should be remembered that the design of the bed should be in harmony with the room and combined with other furniture.

Sleep is the main form of rest for the body. And to make it healthy and of high quality, you should sleep on a comfortable bed. And if it is also made with your own hands, the holiday will seem doubly pleasant. Go for it, and everything will work out for you!

Handmade furniture will transform any interior, and this applies not only to small shelves or decorative wood crafts.

A wooden bed is the real decoration of the bedroom. The only drawback is the price. There is no need to compromise and buy furniture entirely or partially assembled from wood panels.

A do-it-yourself wooden bed made from solid pine will surpass a factory product in terms of consumer characteristics and help you save significantly.

Variety of models

There are a huge number of types of beds, almost any of them can be made independently, of course, if you have the desire, skills in handling the material and the necessary tools. A novice furniture maker can be recommended to choose one of the most common options.

Classic bed

The bed looks familiar to everyone - a massive, stable structure on legs. The design can be either exquisitely simple or elaborately elegant. Carved wood decorations and turned parts are often used as decorative elements. Separately, it can be supplemented with a canopy, which is installed on high carved racks. A four-poster bed looks great in the middle of a spacious bedroom, on a small elevation - a podium.

Provencal style

Outwardly, it is very similar to a simple classic wooden bed, but has a number of significant differences. First of all, light wood is traditionally chosen for its manufacture, and the finished product is painted exclusively in light colors. There are carved elements in large quantities. In addition to originality, this type of bed is functional; it has drawers for bed linen.

East style

The design of the oriental bed perfectly combines healthy minimalism with functionality. The frame is most often located directly on the floor or very low on small legs; only dark wood is used for manufacturing. Perfect for a bedroom, the design of which is dominated by the East in all its manifestations.

Bunk bed

First of all, this is children's furniture. Ideal for large families who live in small apartments. This type of bed is easy to make, takes up little space, and children really like it.

Art Nouveau bed

Modern is a broad concept. Models created in this style from wood can differ radically from each other. The basis of modernity is simplicity and functionality. The style does not allow excessive frills or excessive decorations. In short, fewer frills, smoothed corners, convenience, reliability and comfort. Often such models are made of plywood.

Why make your own bed?

Surely many will have a question - why make a bed yourself, if in any furniture store you can choose a model for every taste and budget. There are several situations when purchasing would not be the best option:

  • it is difficult to find furniture that would fit perfectly into the bedroom design;
  • a comfortable double mattress was purchased in advance, but the dimensions do not allow it to be used on a standard bed;
  • structural features of the body require an individual approach to the dimensions and reliability of furniture;
  • the desire to save money, because a home-made bed will be much cheaper than a purchased one;
  • If you have the time, the skill, the tool, why not make something with your own hands.

Of course, you can also add the desire to surprise friends and acquaintances with a unique handmade product. But it doesn’t matter what exactly prompted a person to start making furniture from wood, it is important that the work brings pleasure. By the way, it is quite possible that this will become more than a hobby. You can make good money by creating pieces of furniture.

Materials

The durability of the bed primarily depends on the quality of the materials used. A reliable structure will be made from solid wood. Timber is ideal for making legs; the frame can be made from boards of sufficient thickness. When going to the store, you need to understand that the better the wood, the higher its price, but it is not at all necessary to buy all the most expensive things. We need to find that golden mean, the price segment in which the cost fully corresponds to the quality.

The board for the frame (frame) must be of high quality and dry, otherwise it will move. You should choose lumber with a minimum number of knots, without cracks, darkening and signs of pest activity. The choice of wood species depends on the project and available funds.

Note! Oak or ash is considered one of the best, pine gives good results, and the use of linden allows you to make a unique carved bed.

If the goal is not so ambitious, for example, you need furniture for your dacha, then you don’t need to spend a lot. In this case, it is easier to make your own bed from plywood or wood-based boards. Another option for a summer house or hunting lodge could be a bed made from solid logs with a diameter of about 80 mm. It can also decorate a bedroom in a city apartment decorated as a hall with hunting trophies.

Dimensions

The bed is where a person spends a third of his life, so it should also be comfortable. Individual size is the obvious advantage of making a bed with your own hands from boards. Dimensions are selected based on your own preferences, therefore, your sleep will be sound and healthy.

The easiest way is to determine the length of the future product. Actually, the length is the height of a person plus 30-40 cm. The standard length of a bed is 2-2.2 m. A comfortable width is the size of a person lying on his back with his fingers clasped and his elbows spread to the sides. 20-30 cm is added to the resulting value. Of course, this applies to a single bed; for a double bed, you need to take the comfortable width of the largest family member and multiply by two.

You can find drawings of a bed made of solid wood, which you can easily make with your own hands, on the Internet, and you can create your own unique project. In any case, you should start by purchasing a mattress. Making a bed based on its dimensions is much easier than then looking for a mattress that will ideally fit the finished frame.

Manufacturing Guide

It is better to start a new business with the simplest thing. A good wooden structure that even a novice furniture maker can handle is a bed without a backrest. It can be made from thick plywood, boards or timber, if desired, modify the massive legs of a rectangular section, or assemble a backrest of a characteristic shape from slats.

You will get a real Japanese-style bed. This is a simple basic model. Once you have mastered this design, you can make beds of any shape and style.

Tools and materials

The first step is to prepare the instrument. There is not much of it, basically this is what any home craftsman has in his workshop. You will need:

  • tape measure, pencil, square;
  • a circular saw;
  • electric drill;
  • hand sander;
  • several clamps;
  • sandpaper of different grain sizes;
  • paint brushes.

You also can’t do without fasteners. You will need self-tapping screws with a length of 30 to 60 mm. Wood glue will help ensure the reliability of the connections. To give the product a finished look, you need stain, furniture varnish or paint.

The bed is made entirely of wood, so, armed with a tape measure, you need to look at the building materials store and pick up boards and beams. You need a board 2.5 cm thick with a width of 20 and 7.5 cm, timber 5 x 10 cm. Material for the legs - a piece of timber 10 x 10 cm.

Cutting lumber

Using a circular saw, cut out blanks of the following sizes:

  • support: 3 pcs. 5 x 10 x 202 cm;
  • frame: 2 pcs. 2.5 x 20 x 205 cm, 2 pcs., 2.5 x 20 x 148.5 cm;
  • legs: 6 pcs. 10 x 10 x 10.5 cm;
  • slatted bottom: 19 pcs. 2.5 x 7.5 x 148 cm.

In the design under consideration, the bottom will consist of parallel slats; this method is much better than a plywood board, since the mattress can breathe. If you still decide to make a simple bottom from a plywood sheet, then it is advisable to drill several small holes in it, evenly spaced over the area.

Frame making

The work begins with making the frame. The best way to fasten boards together is to connect them with self-tapping screws screwed at an angle. This method has the advantage of not requiring the use of additional reinforcing elements, which add strength to the structure but cause damage to the mattress. The only difficulty with this method is the need to drill holes at a precise angle. An attachment that secures the drill will help here.

After drilling, it is necessary to smooth out any irregularities and remove burrs from the wood. A sanding machine is perfect for this. The corners of the boards are cut with the same tool.

The joints are smeared with wood glue, the screws are tightened, the joint is fixed with clamps, not forgetting to control the accuracy of the angle. Next the frame is painted. The color shade can be any; if desired, you can preserve the texture of the wood by enhancing it with stain and covering it with several layers of furniture varnish. Using stain, you can age the wood, creating an imitation of antique furniture.

Bottom supports

Using the same “angle screws” method, side supports are made. Holes are drilled every 25 cm, maintaining the exact angle. On the inside of the frame, mark the guide installation line. It should retreat 5 cm from the bottom side of the frame.

A layer of wood glue is applied to the end of the support. The best application method is wave. It provides excellent fixation with rational glue consumption. The support is installed in its place. The outer and central screws are screwed in and the joint is secured evenly along the entire length with clamps. Screw in the remaining screws.

The central support is fixed in the same way, only at the end. The reliability of the structure will be ensured by three self-tapping screws: one on one side and two on the other.

Bed legs

The shape of the legs depends on the wishes of the master. A simple option is an inclined cut at the bottom of the workpiece. It's easy and original. You can leave the strict shape of a rectangular block or turn the workpiece on a lathe. In any case, the legs are sanded with sandpaper, painted or varnished.

The legs are attached under the supports, two on each support bar. The optimal mounting location is 0.5 m from the edge. This will ensure the reliability of the structure and evenly distribute the load on the floor covering.

Bottom slats

The outlines of the product are already being drawn. All that remains is to fasten the slats, put on the mattress, and, in principle, the bed can be used. Perhaps it would be correct to cut out the slats after the frame is assembled. This will make your work much easier and protect you from mistakes, because everything is possible. During assembly, a millimeter or two can easily be lost, as a result of which each rail will have to be adjusted.

Note! The easiest way is to cut one piece and use it as a reference when cutting the rest.

Then the work will go faster, you won’t have to measure each of them, and besides, this method guarantees that the parts will be exactly the same.

The layout of the slats is extremely simple - they are laid parallel at equal intervals. To ensure accurate intervals, you need to use a template - a piece of board of suitable thickness.

The slats can be attached in different ways. It's easier and faster to use a hammer and nails. You can give preference to self-tapping screws, furniture screws or just glue.

Decorative design

The described design is truly universal. Using decorative elements, the bed can easily fit into any interior. What decor to use is up to the master. The easiest way is to add a strip of contrasting color, which is glued along the contour of the frame. Even such a minor detail is enough for the bed to become the decoration of a stylish bedroom.

Instead of a backrest, you can attach a board upholstered with padding polyester and soft fabric or leatherette to the wall above the headboard. In addition, place a bedside table nearby or make your own shelf for books, electronic gadgets, and a lamp. The color scheme is chosen exclusively individually.

There is no more important piece of furniture in a modern apartment than a bed. A person needs to rest after a hard day of work, and a bed can help with this. Of course, choosing a bed is not an easy task, and often simply impossible. If for some reason it didn’t work out to choose a bed for a pleasant stay, you can always do it yourself. Next we will describe how to make a bed with your own hands.

Kinds

First, it is worth noting that the appearance, size and materials from which the bed will be made completely depend on the imagination and financial capabilities of the person assembling it. The options are different: from a simple single wooden bed to a large double bed, made in the shape of a spaceship, decorated with various elements. The most common options can be identified.

A simple, most familiar model, chosen by many precisely because of its ease of execution. Four legs, two cross fastenings on the sides, two backs and a slatted bottom. In a word - classic.

The next step in modern bed-making was the equipping of their products with drawers - for storing various things in them, from bed linen to some personal items. Almost any bed can be equipped with drawers, even after its assembly is completed.

Today, transforming beds are gaining great popularity. As you can understand from the name itself, such a bed can be turned into a completely different piece of furniture with a slight movement of the hand. It allows you to save a lot of free space in the apartment.

There are also a lot of transformation options, and here are the main ones:

  • Wardrobe bed. The frame of such beds is often made of light but durable metals that can not deform under constant loads during sleep, as well as when stored folded. The bed itself is a vertical structure with three walls, built-in drawers and a lifting mechanism on which the frame is installed.

When folded, the closet can be closed either by the bottom of the frame or by special doors that open during sleep. The big disadvantage of this design is the limited number of things that can be placed in the cabinet drawers. These will not be very frequently used items. However, the space that such a bed will help save most often covers this minus.

  • Bed-table. Most often, this transformation option is used in families with children attending school. The size of the table (and the bed that comes from it) is very limited, and it is quite difficult for an adult to enjoy a pleasant sleep. To strengthen the entire structure, a furniture wall with cabinets and shelves is used, into which a table is mounted, the far part of which turns into a bed.

  • Perhaps, chair-bed is the most common type of sliding beds without a frame found in most apartments. Such products are also called frameless. Additional sleeping space for one person, as well as a comfortable chair for the rest of the time, it couldn’t be better. Previously, such a chair was an integral part of a set with a sofa, but today, due to the growing popularity of decorating apartments in the style of minimalism, the fashion for such products is rapidly disappearing.

  • Pouf bed. The same transformable bed, but without armrests and backrest. A modern folding bed with high-quality fillings and spring blocks. This option is suitable for almost any apartment, since this product takes up very little space, folds out into a bed in literally seconds and is ideal for sleeping.

Folding horizontal products can be considered a separate type of bed that you can make with your own hands. Such models differ from transformers in that they do not turn into any separate piece of furniture, but are folded using a special mechanism into a furniture wall, into which almost everything necessary can be additionally built-in.

Floating beds are the rage of modern fashion. They, of course, do not float, but due to the original organization of the elements holding the bed, it seems as if nothing is holding it at all. The decision to make and install such a model in your apartment is quite bold, but at the same time extremely interesting.

There are many different options for decorating the space under the bed. There is lighting, shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow and creating the effect of romance and mystery, and various rugs that turn the room into a soft, pleasant room. There are many options, just use your imagination.

The last variety worth talking about is hanging beds. They look very beautiful and truly unique, although making such a bed even with your own hands will be easier than other pieces of furniture. The main condition for using this type of sleeping place is the ability to allocate a sufficiently large space for it, since the hanging mechanism tends to swing with a small amplitude.

Deciding on the size

When making something with your own hands, there are many, many things to consider. When choosing a bed, its size will be a very important factor. Of course, the size also depends on a variety of nuances.

The first nuance is the need to have a certain number of sleeping places in the room. If the room allows, then you can provide it with a bed of absolutely any size. Of course, many make classic single and double beds. So, the following nuance emerges.

For almost any homemade bed, you need to choose a mattress that should very clearly fit the size of the bed. This is a very important choice, since an incorrectly selected mattress can become the key to poor sleep, leading to various nervous disorders, psychoses, and problems with the human skeleton. Currently, mattresses are manufactured in the following size ranges:

  • 90×200;
  • 120×200;
  • 140×200;
  • 180x200;
  • 160×200;
  • 80×190;

  • 180×80;
  • 90×190;
  • 70×160;
  • 120×180;
  • 150×200;
  • 90×180;
  • 170x80.

Based on this size chart, you should also calculate the size of the future bed. Of course, everything should be done as carefully as possible. There should not be any inaccuracies.

Mattress base options

Having decided on the dimensions, you can move on to choosing such an important part of the bed as the base for the mattress. Yes, of course, you can do without a mattress, replacing it with a non-removable filler from the same chair-beds and similar furniture, but it is extremely difficult to do this at home, so most often beds are made for a mattress.

They are like this:

  • Today it is already considered a relic of the past, but in some places you can still see a flat base. It consists of boards knocked together to form wooden shield, on which the mattress is placed. There are practically no advantages to this design (compared to more modern options), but there are a lot of disadvantages.

  • Slatted bottom. The most common base option. This product is sold in almost any store and can be replaced with a slight movement of the hand. It consists of several bending strips (lamellas), made of different materials (most often wood is used), placed at an equal short distance from each other and laid on a frame. It is inserted directly into the mattress niche.

There are options with shock absorbers that automatically distribute weight throughout the mattress, and products without them, designed for light loads. If something happens to the slats, as mentioned above, they can even be replaced one at a time.

  • Orthopedic. Such a bottom always has a metal frame at its base - a pipe that holds the entire structure. The lamellas at such a base bend better - due to a special manufacturing method associated with gluing the material from which the parts are made. So-called lath holders, made of plastic and designed to hold the lamellas, are attached to the frame.

  • Plastic. Such bases are quite different from all previous options in that they are based on plastic springs, which provide better elasticity of the frame and the ability to control the level of rigidity of the sleeping place. Of course, this option is also more expensive, but its orthopedic component makes you think a hundred times about whether it is worth saving on your health.

Features of the metal product

When choosing various metals as the main materials for making a bed, you should make sure that the selected material will be as durable as possible and can withstand heavy loads. Today, beds made of metal are even cheaper than their wooden “counterparts”. Most often, profile pipes are used to make the frame, which are easier to work with. Buying them is also quite easy.

As in any business, making a metal bed frame is fraught with various difficulties. At home, for example, it is almost impossible to make such products, because you need to have a rather specific tool for cutting, processing and welding metal structures. However, all efforts will be justified, since the end result will be a bed that will serve faithfully for many years. It is quite possible that not even one generation.

It should also be taken into account that a metal bed:

  • Has more weight than analogues.
  • Often non-dismountable, so the installation location must be chosen wisely.
  • Due to joints and poorly processed welds, it can damage interior elements, the floor, and also cause injuries to both children and adults.

You can even make a bed from polypropylene pipes, which will be much cheaper, more convenient to assemble, but at the same time less durable. Such designs are not designed for heavy weight, and they are recommended to be used only for the manufacture of children's beds. Of course, no one forbids making an adult bed, but this is fraught with its rapid deformation, destruction - and simply poor sleep.

Popular materials

Having decided on the dimensions, frame and base for the mattress, it is worth thinking about another very important element. About the material from which all previous elements will be made. Of course, wood will be the most environmentally friendly, visually pleasing and aesthetically correct choice, but its cost can scare off many craftsmen.

If price is not the main thing for you, then you should pay attention to the fact that for the bed you need to choose only the highest quality wood species, such as oak, beech, ash, mahogany, birch and others. The materials must be well dried and without the slightest cracks. Of course, there shouldn't be any knots either. These can be boards or bars, fastened with special glue - to obtain so-called laminated boards. When the boards are ready, they are coated with a special water-based varnish, which will ensure preservation of their appearance and protection from moisture for many years.

  • The most difficult type of tree to understand is aspen. For some reason, many craftsmen (and ordinary people) associate this particular tree with various superstitions, which vary so much that it is extremely difficult, and often impossible, for an unprepared person to understand.

Of course, this tree species is famous not only for superstitions. Even the most skilled experts cannot decide what time of year is best to cut aspen for further processing. Some say it's the end of spring, others prefer the end of summer. In general, everything is very ambiguous.

  • The most popular and cheapest material today is PVC – or polyvinyl chloride. This material is a colorless plastic, very convenient for processing and further use. It has average characteristics in terms of price and quality ratio, which is why it is so popular, but experts say that polyvinyl chloride, when heated, emits dangerous fumes that can harm human health.

  • Approximately at the same level of popularity as PVC MDF - or fine fraction. The name, of course, sounds quite unusual, but in reality these are just slabs made using high pressure (from medium-density wood fibers).

MDF has a fairly obvious disadvantage. Of course, we are talking about a very bad combination with water. Too much humidity for such a material is detrimental, since dry compressed fibers swell, destroying the original structure of the board, as well as the paint coating, which greatly affects the appearance and possibility of further use of the product as a whole.

  • As mentioned above, in addition to wood and plastic, other materials are also used to make beds. various metals, from simple sheet iron to gold and platinum. The features of this choice are described in the corresponding section.

How to make a two-tier model at home?

It may seem that making a bunk bed is not very necessary for most people, but for families raising two or more children, this model is a real salvation. Of course, if there is a separate children's room, then you can put a couple of beds for each baby, but is it worth cluttering up the extra space that can be used as a wall bars, for example.

Wooden

This model is the simplest of all possible, so almost any (even a beginner) craftsman can make it. Such beds are called classic. Such furniture consists of only 11 necessary elements:

  • vertical racks – 4 pcs.;
  • covers for vertical posts – 4 pcs.;
  • drawers - 4 pcs.;
  • longitudinal strips for frame boards – 4 pcs.;
  • top panels of headboard and footboard – 4 pcs.;
  • central headboard and footboard strips – 4 pcs.;
  • stair railings – 1 pc.;
  • stairs steps – 3 pcs.;
  • fencing strips – 4 pcs.;
  • slats for the base of the mattress – 24 pcs.;
  • end boards of the supporting frame – 4 pcs.

  • First you need to install the headboard and footboard. To do this, the corresponding upper and central strips are attached to the vertical posts at the required level.
  • Then drawers are installed in special grooves, which are fastened with self-tapping screws.
  • After installing the structure, you can begin to secure the staircase railing and its steps.
  • We can say that the assembly is complete. All that remains is to further process all the joints to avoid the appearance of burrs and chips, as well as install guard rails on both beds and lay transverse slats to support the mattress.

How to assemble a retractable podium bed?

A podium bed is one of the types of transformers, but this furniture differs from them in that it does not turn into another piece of furniture on its own, but when folded becomes part of the room as a whole. A podium is an artificial elevation that serves as the floor in a room.

When you are about to start assembling, you need to realize that the manufacture of such a complex structure is, although a very practical solution, but at the same time such work is very difficult. To install such furniture, you should contact specialists.

If the services of a specialist are not necessary, here are some assembly tips:

  • First you need to draw a sketch of the future podium - along with a built-in bed. To do this, you need to know as accurately as possible the dimensions of the room, the height of the bed frame, its width and length, the height of the mattress that will be used for sleeping, as well as the height of the wheels with which the bed will roll out of its “storage.”

Instead of wheels, you can use a special mechanism, but its installation should also be taken into account in the calculations, since its parts make the bed slightly wider. In no case should you choose the height of the bed frame close to the hole from which it will be removed, in order to avoid jamming and other operational problems.

  • As soon as the sketch is completed, everything is measured to the nearest millimeter, you need to start choosing the materials from which all the elements will be created. When creating such structures, you should pay attention to additional strengthening of the podium supports to avoid collapse. It is recommended to use plywood or MDF as the floor of the podium, since they have the required strength, but at the same time are not very heavy.

  • After selecting the materials, you can begin assembly, but before this you need to dismantle the skirting boards, since they will definitely interfere with the installation of the frame. At the initial stage, according to a pre-drawn sketch, it is necessary to assemble a frame in which space should be left for the bed itself, space for storing other things, as well as stairs. The next stage of assembly will be the bed frame, also created according to the sketch. After all the manipulations, all that remains is to assemble the storage boxes, cover the podium frame with plywood or MDF and attach a ladder.

All. The podium bed is ready.

Homemade model with a lifting mechanism: step-by-step instructions

As with any other bed, the assembly of this model must begin by creating a drawing. The more detailed and better it is made, the easier it will be to assemble the bed. Hard to learn, easy to fight. If you have no experience in assembling such beds, then you can take ready-made drawings on the Internet or from manufacturers.

So, the drawing is ready, it’s time to decide on the necessary materials and tools. For assembly you will need boards, wooden slats, particle board (chipboard), self-tapping screws with a set of screwdrivers and a lifting mechanism. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to make it yourself, so you will have to buy it. The lifting mechanism can be gas or mechanical. The gas mechanism can be fixed in a certain position or without.

Once everything you need has been collected, you can proceed to the most important thing - preparing the parts and assembling:

  • First, you need to make the sides, drawers, headboard, and bottoms for the drawers from chipboard or MDF.
  • You need to assemble a frame for the base from timber.
  • Then a base for the mattress is created - from boards and wooden slats.
  • From these parts you can assemble a frame. Once the frame is assembled, the bed can be considered almost complete. All that remains is to attach the drawers and sides, attach the bottom of the drawers and fix the headboard.
  • The final touch will be the installation of the lifting mechanism and the covering of the finished product. For cladding, it is best to use sheet foam rubber laid in several layers. This will give the product softness and comfort, and will also hide all the sharp corners.

You can cover the foam with fabric or other materials - such as leatherette or leather. The main thing is that the selected material matches the overall interior of the room. This will give the bed an aesthetically pleasing and complete look.

How to make a round bed correctly?

Round beds, although they are interesting interior solutions, are still not installed very often in apartments, since not everyone can afford to install such a piece of furniture in the center of the room, where it belongs. In the corner it will “eat up” the free space.

As before, you should start preparing with a drawing, the most important detail of any business. It is necessary to compare the size of the room in which the bed will be installed with the future dimensions of the bed itself. Most often, round models are made double.

Having decided on the dimensions and prepared everything you need, you can begin manufacturing parts and assembling:

  • To begin with, from two sheets of MDF or plywood, using special measuring tools, you need to cut out two semicircles - the future base for the bed.
  • A crosspiece, specially assembled from bars equal in length to the diameter of the base, is attached to the finished circle, on which the legs and another cross are installed, crowning the bed frame.

  • After preparing the crosspieces, additional legs are installed around the perimeter of the circle, designed to improve the stability of the bed.
  • After these manipulations, the frame is turned over - and we can say that its assembly is complete. The last step of creation will be the installation of sides for the mattress made of thin plywood, as well as covering the finished product with foam rubber (for softness) and fabric (for beauty).

Decor options

As mentioned above, assembling a bed largely depends on the imagination of the assembler and his ability to pay, which gives a lot of options for the final product. If we talk about decoration, then in this regard the number of options is simply huge. The main thing is to be able to choose the appropriate method. This requires good taste.

With the help of various decorative figurines, inlays, imitation precious stones or real jewelry, carvings, combining different types of upholstery and other options, even the simplest bed can be turned into a work of art. Even just leather or leatherette can completely change the look of a bed. If you add a carriage tie there, the result will be simply amazing.

You shouldn’t go too far in decorating, as in any other matter, otherwise all the efforts made will lead to pretentiousness and loss of beauty of the finished product.

In addition to the types of beds described above that you can create with your own hands, there are also quite unusual ones - and very interesting for use in the interior.

One of these non-standard solutions is a bed made from plastic bottles. Of course, this is not the pinnacle of art, and the convenience of such a design is very questionable. However, if you equip such furniture with lighting, and use bottles as many legs under a real base for a mattress, then it can turn out very, very good.

Non-standard, but gaining popularity in the modern world, are beds made in the loft style. This style in itself implies the design of the entire room in the form of a workshop or factory premises, so the bed must match. You can, for example, hang it from the ceiling so that it stays there on a special structure until the appointed hour. At night, the bed is lowered and used for its intended purpose. An interesting frameless solution, to say the least.
