Brief characteristics of purple sedum. Purple sedum is a wonderful plant to have in your garden. Planting and care

Thank you

Often, while walking through fields and forests, we admire a beautiful carpet of purple, pink, yellow and white flowers, without thinking that this very “carpet” can cure many serious diseases. Such a riot of colors is produced by a plant called sedum. We’ll talk about its benefits, application and properties further.

Description of the sedum plant

Sedum is a perennial (although sometimes there are also annual species) a plant from the Crassula family.

This plant, which has an erect, hard stem, rarely exceeds 1 m in height. Quite thick, smooth, but fleshy sedum leaves have indentations at the base.

The star-shaped, medium-sized flowers of the plant are collected in dense and neat corymbose, umbrella-shaped or racemose inflorescences of white, yellow, purple and pinkish color (it all depends on the type of sedum).

Most often, sedums can be found in temperate and mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

Collecting sedum

The medicinal raw material is predominantly freshly harvested sedum grass, harvested during the flowering period (sedum blooms from July until October, while the fruits form in the fall).

The grass is collected exclusively in dry weather (it is better to do this in the morning, after the dew has evaporated). The grass is cut with knives or scissors. You cannot pull out the plant with its roots (the roots are dug up between September and October, after which they are cut into small pieces and dried in the fresh air).

The raw materials are dried in the air, under a canopy (you can use an attic for this purpose, which should be well ventilated).

Important! During the process of inactive drying, the plant continues to grow (may even bloom), which significantly reduces its medicinal properties. For this reason, it is recommended, firstly, to dry the crushed raw materials, and secondly, to scald small parts with boiling water, then dry the raw materials in the sun and dry them in a dryer or in an oven at a temperature of about 60 - 80 degrees.

Dried sedum grass, which has a weak, peculiar odor, is stored for no longer than two years, while the roots are suitable for use for three years.

Varieties of sedum

The sedum genus is rightfully considered the most diverse and extensive, as it has more than 600 species.

Sedum grows in Europe, in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, as well as in the Mediterranean, Siberia, Japan, and China.

This plant is winter-hardy and tropical, evergreen and deciduous.

The following types of sedum are predominantly common in Russia:

  • caustic (yellow);
  • white;
  • thick-leaved;
  • Caucasian;
  • false;
  • Kamchatka;
  • purple;
  • big;
  • prominent.

Sedum (rabbit cabbage)

Caustic sedum (this species is also called “rabbit cabbage”) is perennial plant, which has a short rhizome and thick roots. It is interesting that in the first year of life the plant does not have flowers (they appear only in the second year of life). Numerous sedum flowers are golden or yellow in color. The star-shaped flowers of sedum are collected in branched inflorescences.

This type of sedum can be found throughout Russia, and it prefers clearings, rocks, wastelands, meadows and unshaded forests.

Despite the fact that this plant is poisonous, it is widely used in the treatment of diseases such as epilepsy, malaria, hypertension, hepatitis, atherosclerosis, fever, and scurvy.

Benefits of sedum:

  • Helping to increase hemoglobin.
  • Normalization of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Accelerating the healing of ulcers, gangrene, acne, purulent wounds and abscesses (sedum preparations are used in such cases as an external remedy).
  • Promoting the removal of warts, freckles and calluses (plant juice is used).
  • Activation of breathing.
  • Lowering blood pressure (especially in combination with medicinal plants such as mistletoe and hawthorn).
  • Increased urination.
In addition, sedum preparations act as a laxative, while poultices from this plant effectively fight tumors.

Purple sedum grows in Eurasia, as well as in many regions of Russia. You can meet him in an open area filled with sun.

Pink or purple sedum flowers are quite small and have 5 petals.

Purple sedum or squeaky cabbage or rabbit cabbage- Sedum telephium L. is a perennial herbaceous plant from the Crassulaceae family with fleshy roots, tuberously thickened. The stem is erect, from 10 to 70 cm high, unbranched, succulent, ending in an inflorescence. Each individual has a single stem or several. The leaves are alternate, ovate-oblong, 2-7 cm long and 1-3 cm wide, succulent, fleshy, unequally toothed along the edge, the lower ones are wedge-shaped narrowed towards the base, the upper ones are sessile, with a rounded base.
The flowers are collected in a dense apical corymbose inflorescence. The calyx is green, with 5 sharp sepals. The corolla is purple, lilac or pink, with 5 oblong-lanceolate petals 5-6 mm long. There are 10 stamens. There are 5 pistils, with upper 1-locular ovaries fused at the base.
Purple sedum blooms from July to autumn. Accordingly, the fruits begin to ripen in August. Pollination is carried out by insects. In place of each flower, 5 fruits are formed (according to the number of pistils). The fruit is a red or pink leaf about 6 mm long, with a short spout. There are many seeds in each leaflet, they have a furrowed brownish surface.

Spread of purple sedum

Purple sedum is distributed over a large area of Eurasia. It is found in many regions of Russia, from the western borders to Far East, excluding the Arctic belt.
It grows mainly in open places: in the steppes, on steppe meadows, in light dry forests (for example, in pine forests), on the edges, clearings, among bushes, on riverbanks along the river, near roads, on dry clay and rocky slopes, even on rocks Settles in forest fires, fallow fields and fallow lands.

Other related species of purple sedum

In the western regions of European Russia, there is another type of sedum, which is also called hare cabbage - large sedum. It is distinguished from purple sedum by its white or yellowish flowers and opposite leaves. In folk medicine, both types are used equally.

Economic uses of purple sedum

Purple sedum is a good honey plant. Beekeepers value it because the flowers secrete nectar even in dry, hot weather, when many other honey plants stop nectar secretion. The plant is quite decorative. It is planted in flower beds.
Leaves and young above-ground shoots of purple sedum are used for nutrition. They have a pleasant sour taste and are suitable for salads and soups. For consumption in winter, they are pickled or fermented.

Medicinal value of sedum purpurea and methods of medicinal use

In folk medicine, the aerial part (grass) is used, less often the fleshy roots. Medicines made from them are used as a tonic for general weakness, nervous disorders, and impotence.
Greater sedum has found application in scientific medicine in Russia. An extract from the aerial part of this plant - biosed - stimulates metabolic processes and tissue regeneration. It is used as an adjuvant in the treatment of pneumonia, bronchitis, hepatitis and other diseases. It is used for long-term treatment of non-healing wounds and trophic ulcers. Also used in ophthalmological practice and otolaryngology. According to some scientists, the above-ground mass of purple sedum can also be used to produce biosed.
Sedum - succulent succulent plant, retains moisture well and therefore does not dry well. To speed up drying, raw materials can be scalded with boiling water to kill living tissue and deprive them of their water-holding capacity.
The plant has a wound-healing and hemostatic effect. The infusion of the herb stimulates the heart, increasing its contractions.
In addition, the herb infusion is used for female infertility, nervous disorders and epilepsy as a tonic and strengthening agent for general weakness of the body.

Good afternoon! In nature there are a huge number medicinal herbs, but there are not so many plants with truly powerful healing properties. Purple sedum rightfully belongs to such miracle herbs, which is what today’s story will be about.

It cannot be said that this plant mainly loves lowlands. It can be found on rocks, on plains or on forest edges. Only one thing can be said with certainty: it will never grow in the field. You can grow it on your own plot, I know that many people do this.

They are collected at the very top of the stem into a wide panicle. The flowering time of sedum is from August until frost.
