I planted the plants in a specially dug hole, into which I poured several buckets of compost, rotted manure and a handful of superphosphate. All components were thoroughly mixed together with the earth taken out of the hole. Then every year, in the spring, I added one handful of azofoska or nitroammofoska and a bucket of rotted manure and compost under the bushes. When the bushes grew, in the spring I only applied complex fertilizer, scattering it around the tree trunk circles. In dry summers, the hazel tree was watered generously once a week.

Next to the hazel trees, lilac bushes and the most common, ubiquitous bush roses were planted in a row. Later, I read somewhere that the roots of hazel emit toxic substances, which means that no other plants can survive under these bushes and next to them. And so it happened, a few years later. The bush rose “escaped” from its unwanted neighborhood, sending out new shoots far from the hazel roots, and the mother plants themselves died. And this despite the fact that they grew in a sunny place. Lilac lived a little longer, but was in a depressed state all the time. And then she died too. So the hazel carved out a large living space for itself. Perhaps this also happened because the hazel tree has a powerful root system. Even grass doesn't grow under it. Five meters under the neighboring lilac bushes a sapling grows, but it does not “get close” to the hazel. Rotted manure and compost that we added to trunk circle hazel, and friendly weed shoots (and there are a lot of weed seeds in them) also did not produce. This property of hazel is very convenient when it comes time to collect nuts. You don’t need to look for them in the grass, they are all in plain sight.

We collected and tasted the first harvest - a handful of nuts - five years after planting. And since that time, our hazel tree bears fruit abundantly every year. Hazel harvests are always impressive. We collect more than ten liters of nuts from two bushes. In this case, part of the harvest is carried away by mice and sometimes squirrels. I have heard complaints from gardeners who also have hazel growing on their property that their fruit harvests are very meager. We dry the nuts in the house, scattering them on newspapers. This process takes at least one month if they are in a warm room. If they do not dry well, the kernels will be located close to the shell, and then it is inconvenient to prick them, as they crumble into small pieces.

Our hazel tree does not produce shoots, but hazel sprouts appear in different corners of the site every year. It’s the mice that spread the nuts that we didn’t have time to collect all over the site and bury them in the ground.
