Among the locks for the home, the most popular models are SHS-P718. Both of them are equipped with a fingerprint scanner.

The H705/5230 model looks more familiar, as it is equipped with a drop-down handle.

The castle itself is quite massive and consists of three main parts: internal and exterior panels, as well as a mortise bolt control unit with an opening sensor.


The outdoor unit contains a touch keyboard, an open button, a fingerprint scanner and closed with a lid the bottom panel, where the mechanical lock cylinder, reset button and contacts for connecting emergency power are located.




The internal unit contains the main control electronics, a compartment for eight AA batteries, a lock button and a mechanical deadbolt drive. Under the battery compartment cover there is a service button “Reg.” to enter the menu, a three-position volume switch and an automatic locking switch.

Installation

Installing an electronic lock is no different from installing a regular one, except that you will have to make two holes in the door, and quite large ones at that. For precise marking on the door itself, the delivery set includes a special double-sided stencil, which is suitable for right- and left-handed doors.

Assembly should be trouble-free, taking into account the attached diagram and detailed description(in our case - in English).

The dimensions of the mortise part are quite typical: 119 × 104 × 24 mm (W × H × D). The width of the end strip is 25 mm.

The external block and the mortise part are connected by flexible cables to the corresponding connectors of the internal block.

Settings

After installing the first four batteries, you will hear a beep indicating that the lock is ready for use. An additional four batteries are needed to increase capacity, otherwise replacement would have to be done once a quarter.

You should start setting up by resetting all registered data (passwords, master password and fingerprints). This procedure is well described in the instructions and consists of entering a special sequence of numbers when open door. After resetting all data, the master password will be set to “1234”.

Next, you need to change the master password and add working passwords and fingerprints. All this is done through the main menu of the system, to enter which you need to press the “Reg.” service button with the door open. under the battery compartment cover, enter the master password and press “*” on the keyboard. A sure sign that you are in the main menu will be a corresponding sound signal and a glowing keyboard, where the numbers “2”, “3” and the “house” icon are off.

Through the main menu you can perform the following operations:

  • adding and removing individual passwords
  • removing all passwords
  • registering and deleting individual fingerprints
  • deleting all fingerprints
  • activation of dual authorization mode
  • activation of double security mode

In general, there are no difficulties here.

Passwords can range from 4 to 12 digits in length. In total, the system stores up to 10 passwords. With prints, the limit is wider - up to 100.

In the very simple case To open the door from the outside, just touch the keypad and enter your password. You can also press the “Open” button and place your finger on the fingerprint scanner that opens. Recognition takes a split second, after which the lock opens.

If double security mode is activated, before entering the password, you will need to press two randomly displayed numbers on the keyboard. And if the double authorization mode is activated, then after entering the password you will need to “show” your finger.

The fingerprint scanner itself is covered with a protective plate that rises automatically. This plate can also be lifted manually with little effort.

The door can be locked using automatic mode (in which case the lock will close each time the door is closed), which is activated by a switch under the battery cover. In “manual” mode, the door is closed using the “Close” button on the indoor unit. If the door is open at the time of pressing, the bolt will extend only after you close the door. The success of the operation will be indicated by a sound signal and the corresponding indicator on the external unit, which will light up for a few seconds.

If the batteries start to run low, the corresponding indicator on the panel will light up every time the door is opened. In this case, it is recommended to replace it within 10 days. If the batteries run out, you have two options: connect external power or use a regular key. External power means a regular Krona battery. To do this, you need to open the cover at the bottom end of the external unit and press it with your hand contact pads, then enter a password or use a scanner. Under the same cover there is a cylinder lock for opening the door with a key.

The lock can be opened from the inside by simply turning the handle or moving the lever located above it to the “open” position.

Potential vulnerabilities

In general, the lock is quite secure and has a well-thought-out design. Despite the apparent flimsiness of the external block, inside it has a shell made of 3 mm aluminum alloy that covers all the insides.

The only concern is the four steel pins into which the 4mm screws are screwed, securing the outer and inner blocks to the door. Perhaps this is the weak link.

And if we were asked what is the easiest way to open a lock, the answer would be: knock it down with a sledgehammer. Surely the steel pins will burst upon impact, and external unit will be dismantled. And then you will have access to the mortise part, where you can use a simple screwdriver to move the bolt. But this is just our guess. It is possible that we are mistaken, and the pins will be strong enough or will bend rather than break.

Excluding barbaric force, one cannot speak of the exceptional “sinlessness” of the castle. Another bottleneck is the optical fingerprint scanner. This means that to bypass the protection, it is quite possible to use (as we used to say in ancient times at the Department of Information Security at MEPhI) biological material (read: the owner’s finger) and dummies. From our point of view, it would be much more logical to install a continuous thermal scanner.

Entering passwords is implemented very thoughtfully. We would recommend immediately using the double security mode, when, before entering a password, you first need to press two numbers randomly displayed on the keyboard. This will protect you in the event that attackers stick a thin film on the keyboard in order to identify the keys pressed. Also, after five incorrect entry attempts, the lock's power will be turned off for three minutes.

Among other security features, there is an alarm that goes off when the door is opened without entering a password or fingerprint. In this case, a quiet siren is activated, which will sound for five minutes. But it can be easily turned off by entering a password or fingerprint, or by removing the batteries or simply pressing the “Reg.” button.

The larva of the castle as a whole inspires optimism. The manufacturer used a mechanism with increased secrecy, which cannot be quickly opened with a hairpin or a special vibration tool. In addition, the larva is located at the bottom of the lock under the lid, and nothing gives away its presence. If desired, the larva can be replaced (only with a branded one) or disabled. To do this you need to disassemble outdoor unit and just remove one link gear.

Results

A thoughtful design is the first thing I would like to praise the developers for. Here you can enter a password with security in the form of two random characters, and the ability to connect external power in case the batteries run out, and even the presence of a mechanical lock. The outdoor unit, under the flimsy-looking plastic, has a “shell” made of 3-mm aluminum alloy. The only thing that can be questioned is the relatively thin steel pins that secure the lock to the door. But this is just our subjective opinion.

The second positive side is the design. The entire series of Samsung locks looks very attractive. Strict look, no “collective farm” or “glamour”.

And now about the shortcomings. What confuses us the most is the optical fingerprint scanner. This device is absolutely defenseless against dummies. Well, getting the desired print and making a dummy is not such a difficult task. If you really want to keep the biometric sensor, then it is better to use a long-term thermal scanner, although this is also not a panacea. The dummy can be heated to desired temperature, and then the doors will also be open. But the biometric scanner has one advantage - the system can store up to 100 fingerprints, which means the lock is suitable for premises where it is necessary to provide private access to a large number of people.

In view of all of the above, models without a biometric sensor, but with RFID cards, look more attractive. For example, Samsung SHS-H505, the price of which will also be a third lower. But they have not yet reached Russia.

It won't turn off by closing the door, and it won't work if you press the open/close button. The alarm can only be turned off by entering a password or de-energizing the lock.
