Types and process of gluing furniture edges made of PVC and melamine onto chipboard. Why do chipboard edges be done and how to glue the edge with an iron

Chipboard is the most suitable material for the production of reliable and high-quality inexpensive furniture. In order to hide the not very aesthetically pleasing internal structure of the product, edging is performed on the end side - the installation of special decorative panels from melamine, PVC or other available types of synthetic plastics.

Why else do they edge furniture?

In addition to the most obvious goal - to provide an elegant appearance, furniture edging performs several more equally important tasks:

Where should edging be done?

Furniture manufacturers often edge only the visible parts of the end surfaces. From the point of view of economy, this seems quite understandable, but taking into account the above facts, this approach can lead to certain problems - the protective edge must be present in all places where there is an open internal structure of the chipboard.

If you purchased furniture with unprotected edges, you can easily do their edging yourself at home. To do this, you do not need to have any special equipment - the edge can be glued with a regular iron.

Don’t be lazy to spend a few minutes on this operation - you will reliably protect yourself and your furniture and significantly extend its service life. Next, we will look in detail at how to properly glue the edge tape with your own hands.

Edge materials

Edging open furniture surfaces can be done using different decorative elements, differing in the quality of the material, appearance and, accordingly, cost.

How to glue an edge with an iron

In production, edging is done using tape with a clean base. The adhesive composition is applied to it during installation at a high temperature, ensuring the formation of a thin, even layer. In order to glue the edge, several rollers are used, pressing it tightly to the base of the chipboard. Then special cutters cut the tape to the size of the part, remove any remaining glue and base material, and sand the joint until a smooth and beautiful surface is obtained.

You can also glue the edge at home. To do this, you need to use a tape with already applied adhesive composition. Further, the process largely repeats industrial edging, since it is performed in a similar way:

You can learn more about the process of gluing edges on chipboard in the video below:

Gluing the U-shaped profile to the end of the chipboard is somewhat easier. We have already discussed this method earlier. This edge is much stronger than melamine, bends quite easily and reliably protects from damage.

The presence of microgaps between the U-profile edge and the front surface of the chipboard does not allow gluing it in the kitchen or bathroom, so edging with this material is mainly used for office furniture.

Edging chipboard, of course, is best done in the factory. In production, you can order tape from any materials, including plastic, PVC and other modern composite materials. Edging on a machine will ensure ideal evenness and accuracy of application of decorative cladding, but it requires certain costs. If the main task is to meet a predetermined small budget, applying melamine tape with your own hands will allow you to combine acceptable quality and the minimum price.

Good afternoon, dear readers, Andrey Noak is in touch! Welcome to the site dedicated to wood and its use in home comfort. There comes a time in everyone’s life when they really want to change something in the interior of their apartment or house. Re-glue the wallpaper, repaint the ceilings, or even change the furniture. However, it’s no secret that such transformations cost money, and sometimes quite a lot.

This is where I am ready to come to your aid. I am glad to inform you that even when buying furniture you can save your money and time. In addition, you will be able to take an active part in the creation of your future interior. To do this, you will have to get acquainted with edging technology or, in other words, how to glue an edge to a chipboard. I have every right to talk about this, because as a technologist I have produced more than one hundred thousand cubic meters of particle board!

When it comes to high-quality edging of chipboards, the question arises: how to glue edges to chipboard? In order to answer this, let’s look at the concept of edge tape.

In the factory production of furniture panels, as a rule, the following types of edge tapes are used: decorative paper tape impregnated with polyester resins, ABS tape, aluminum edges, as well as 3D tapes installed on expensive furniture supplied to order.

The width of the edge tape is 38 mm. It is intended for processing the end parts of chipboard parts, and is necessary to maintain the aesthetics of the entire product. In addition, it serves to protect chipboard from moisture, from evaporation of furniture impregnation, as well as to increase the strength and durability of the product.

The edge on chipboard also has an aesthetic purpose. As mentioned earlier, it is made from different materials. In addition, it comes in different textures, qualities and has a variety of colors. Exists wide range colors and reproducible textures. PVC tape adds an elegant look to the furniture. Also, it is important to note that chipboard edging of furniture sections is the cheapest and affordable way give furniture elements a finished look.

Edge gluing

The work of gluing edges on chipboard can be done not only in industrial, but also at home. To do this, we will need available materials: a hairdryer, an iron, wet wipes, scissors, a sharp knife, a 35-150mm wooden block with sandpaper glued over its entire surface. We take the most suitable edge with glue applied to it. Gluing is carried out to a previously cleaned, burr-free surface. After that, straighten the edge and press it with a heated iron. Gradually smoothing the surface, press the edge tightly against the ends of the part. Under the influence of temperature, the glue heats up and polymerizes, gluing the parts together.

We make sure that the tape is glued to the tabletop evenly, so that its edges do not extend beyond the boundaries of the product. Afterwards, cool the surface, trying to avoid swelling or shifting. After finishing the edging, its edges should be smooth and free of glue residues.

Checking work

Often, facing flaws are revealed after gluing. They look like bubbles, displacement of the edge relative to the part, and glue coming out. In this case, they must be eliminated, applying a different approach to each flaw. For example, bubbles can be eliminated by heating with a hairdryer, followed by ironing. In the same way, edge displacement is eliminated. Only instead of perpendicular pressure, longitudinal pressure is applied. As for the glue residues, everything is generally simple. When heated, it is easily removed from the surface of the facing edge.

Removing excess edge material with a sharp object

Finally, the ends of the edges should be trimmed with a sharp object and then with an emery block in order to give the product completeness and aesthetic beauty. And let the beauty and comfort in the house depend on you. Surround yourself with exclusive, kind, and most importantly - useful things. Well, I, in turn, am always happy to help you create beauty and harmony in your home.

Anyone who has ever encountered laminated chipboard knows that a board made of this material has smooth surfaces with a textured pattern, while its end parts are a mixture of wood shavings and glue. To give parts sawn from such a board a marketable appearance, a process such as chipboard edging was invented. It consists of gluing a decorative strip - an “edge” - onto the ends of the parts, which can be either the same color as the chipboard decor or different from it.

Today, two main types of edges are used:

PVC edge used in the factory production of furniture, it is more reliable, strong, durable, but the edging procedure when using it is quite labor-intensive. Furniture shops use special edge cutting machines. The thickness of the PVC edge is 2 mm and 0.4 mm. The width also varies depending on the thickness of the chipboard sheets.

Melamine edge less durable, but requires a minimum of tools to apply and is widely used among home furniture makers. But due to its low mechanical resistance, its use is limited. Personally, I glue melamine edging mainly to drawers. On back side The melamine edge is always coated with hot melt adhesive, and it itself is sufficiently resistant to elevated temperatures, so a simple iron is enough to stick it on. It can only be thin (0.4 mm) and I have never seen it wider than 20 mm.

Since our site is largely dedicated to working from home, let’s first look at how.

So, for work we need the edge itself, an ordinary iron, a metal ruler, a clamp or vice (optional), and fine sandpaper on a block.

The technique for gluing the edges is as simple as a nail:

Now let's figure out how to glue correctly PVC edge with your own hands, i.e. without using an edging machine. Such an edge will last much longer than a melamine edge, and besides, it is 2 mm and looks “richer”. It is worth mentioning that PVC edges can be either with an adhesive layer (hot melt adhesive) or without it. In the first case, edging occurs using a hair dryer, and in the second case, it is necessary to purchase glue. Let's consider the second method in more detail, because... it is more economically profitable.

Let's start with gluing 0.4 mm PVC edges. To fix it, it is best to use contact types of glue, for example 3M™ Scotch-Grip, Moment Crystal, Titanium or “88”. It is worth noting that it is more convenient to work with liquid glue (3M), it is easier to level and its consumption is much less. We work with glue according to the instructions indicated on the package.

Contact adhesive can be replaced with hot melt adhesive. To do this, you will need a glue gun with a set of rods and an industrial hair dryer.

To work, we will need a roller for pressing the edge (successfully replaced with a rag or a piece of felt boots)), the glue itself, a spatula for leveling the glue or a simple brush, as you like, a wide chisel or a knife from a plane to remove excess edge, a sanding block with fine sandpaper .

Adhesive materials are classified as auxiliary application materials. They really help us make sewing easier and faster.

With their help, the thing receives beautiful view thanks to the clear contours of the finishing details (collars, trims, cuffs, etc.)

Without glue, it is no longer possible to sew outerwear correctly. Adhesive materials are successfully used when sewing clothes from the most delicate materials, chiffons and knitted fabrics.

And if you are just starting to master sewing, then they will become your indispensable assistants.

This article will introduce you to the types of adhesive materials used in sewing clothes at home. At the bottom of the article there is a video that will introduce you to these applied materials.

At their core, adhesive materials are polyamide adhesive applied to the material (non-woven fabric, knitwear, etc.) different ways(spot, continuous), as well as with double-sided gluing and without any material at all (glue powders and cobwebs).

Using adhesive material you can

  • glue the layers together (with glue web, glue powder, glue threads)
  • duplicate (stabilize, strengthen) the main material

Adhesive materials do not leave stains on the surface of the material.

Gluing and duplication with adhesive materials is carried out

  • using a press, steam and high temperature in production.
  • And using a steam iron at home.

The temperature and time for gluing or duplicating depends on the composition and thickness of the fabrics and adhesive materials. Gluing is considered complete when all layers have completely dried and cooled.

Glue web (glue mesh)

Glue web is a fibrous transparent thin canvas made of randomly located polyamide threads connected to each other. Using the high temperature of an iron and steam, it melts, connecting two layers of fabric together. Therefore, it is cut out precisely according to the dimensions of the parts from the material.

Adhesive web is available in the form of canvas and tapes (click on the photo to enlarge)

Glue web used to secure seam allowances and the bottom of the product. It is successfully used for joining parts in applique and patchwork.

Adhesive tape “Prym”, made of polyamide, is designed to reinforce seams and hems of the product. The tape is equipped with a paper protective layer. Used on knitted and elastic fabrics, prevents deformation and stretching. This tape is good to use when hemming the bottom of products.

Self-adhesive tapes are very interesting.

Self-adhesive tapes are designed for sewing and stitching. The Prym tape is self-adhesive on one side. The tape will temporarily hold it together necessary details for stitching, and then easily, without leaving marks, removed from the fabric.

Duplicate adhesive materials

Duplicate adhesive materials are produced by applying glue to auxiliary materials such as non-woven fabric, loose fabric, or thin knitted fabric.

Duplication is the connection of parts of collars, cuffs, valves, shelves and yokes in outerwear with hot-melt adhesive pads over the entire surface of the part. These include adhesive interlinings and dublerins.

But first I will tell you about the adhesive edge, called the dolevik. This is an adhesive strip of thread-stitched interlining. The lines laid along it keep the strip from stretching.

This edge protects the edges of the sides, pockets, lapel folds, and vents from stretching when worn and helps create the required shape of the product. Applying an edge requires skill. Foreign name kantband - kantband

In products made from knitted fabrics, the edge is also glued to the place where the zipper is sewn in.

Doublerins are used for stabilization small parts products: collars, lapels, cuffs, waistbands of skirts and trousers. And in products with lining, the yokes and even partially or completely the main details - the shelf and the back - are duplicated.

Non-woven tape for duplicating the belt in skirts and trousers

Non-woven tape "Prym", made from 60% polyester and 40% cellulose, is intended for processing belts, cuts, vents, facings and leaves. The tape is equipped with three perforated lines. Perforated tapes guarantee rational processing and an impeccable appearance of the belt. The ease of bending along the perforation line greatly facilitates processing. Non-woven fabric has proven itself well in perforated tapes. It gives the belt stability, preventing it from stretching.

Finally, some brief information about the types of adhesive materials and fabric duplication modes

Original and affordable decoration for a T-shirt

The adhesive material can also act as a stabilizer for embroidery if a small area is being embroidered, as in my example.

Almost every sewing machine, even the simplest one, has decorative stitches. They are the ones that decorate the T-shirt pocket in the photo.

Before embroidering, duplicate the pocket with one of the adhesive materials. Then the embroidery will lie flat and will not tighten the fabric (knitwear)

If you make your own furniture from laminated chipboard or MDF, then after cutting the sheets it is necessary to protect their end parts, which will increase the service life of the product and give it a beautiful appearance. For this purpose, PVC furniture edges are often used, but there are other varieties. In this article we will talk about all the types, the need for edging and how to glue it yourself.

Self-adhesive furniture edge - a narrow strip of melamine, polyvinyl chloride, ABS plastic or other material. It protects and decorates the cut area. In the production of cheap furniture from laminated chipboard edge is simply necessary, as it protects people from exposure to harmful formaldehyde. In addition, it gives strength and protects the material from moisture getting inside.

Types of edges

The most popular types are: furniture edge.

  • Melamine edge with glue is the most budget-friendly, but not the highest quality type. It is afraid of moisture and can fall off over time (even without mechanical impact), easily crack and wear off at the corners. The only plus is the pre-applied layer of adhesive, so melamine edging remains a popular option at home.
  • When purchasing furniture, it is important to pay attention to the quality of finishing of the ends. It is better not to buy furniture treated with melamine, as it will not last long.

  • Furniture edging made of PVC 2 and 0.4 mm is best option. It is much more stable and durable. A thickness of 0.4 mm is usually used to process hidden places, and 2 mm is glued to the outer ends that will be visible. However, its application requires a special edge processing machine, so it is used only in production.
  • The edge made of ABS plastic is a more environmentally friendly analogue of the previous option, which is less common on sale.
  • Mortise T-profile - inserted into a milled groove at the end of the chipboard. It was popular in those days when a special machine for PVC edges was rare, and there were plenty of milling machines in the shops.
  • Mortise T-edge
    Profile C18

  • The C18 U-profile overlay is a good option because it can be used for chipboard at home. Usually the C18 U-profile is simply put on the end and glued to liquid nails. The downside is that the edges protrude a few millimeters, under which dirt gets clogged. On the other hand, this feature is very convenient if you cut chipboard with your own hands; large edges will hide uneven cuts and chips. This type is often used for.
  • For gluing on the machine, use a special hot melt adhesive for PVC edges. It is sold in granule form and becomes liquid when heated. The adhesive is applied to the tape either when heated or during the production of the tape.

    Chipboard edges

To ensure that your countertop or cabinet edge is beautiful and durable, in the best possible way will order edging at production. This is usually done in the same place where laminated chipboards are purchased and ordered.

Approximate prices for application (per 1 linear meter including material):

    • PVC edge 2 mm – 40 rub.;
    • PVC edging 0.4 mm – 25 rubles;
    • edge for melamine chipboard – 25 rubles;
    • You will have to pay additionally for processing curved sections.

The most popular PVC edge in Russia is Rehau, it has a wide selection color range, so you can choose a color to match any chipboard. The width of the tape varies - from 15 to 45 mm.

To order this service for a store, you must first prepare a diagram of how to glue the PVC edge: in what places to apply it and what thickness. Those places that will not wear out can be covered with 0.4 mm PVC to save money (for example, the back and bottom edges). All visible areas are treated with 2 mm PVC. Where the joint will be attached to the joint with another part, no processing is needed.
The difference between PVC coating 0.4 and 2 mm
    Let's give an example.

    • On the internal inset shelf, only the front edge is treated with a layer of 2 mm.
    • The top cover is on all sides (the back edge is 0.4 mm, the rest - 2 mm).
    • The drawer front is processed on all sides with a thickness of 2 mm.

To simplify calculations, you can use special furniture programs; they create a project automatically. As a result, to assemble an average wardrobe, a PVC edge for chipboard will cost 1.5-2 thousand rubles. It won't be very cheap, but it will be of high quality, safe and durable.

    Glue the edge yourself

For those who want to save money, there is a melamine edge with glue that is glued with an iron. This option is quite suitable for repairs old furniture– don’t carry several small boards into the workshop. To solve the question of how best to glue the edge to the tabletop, it is better not to be lazy and contact the manufacturer, or still use an overlay profile, since melamine will quickly deteriorate from moisture and abrasion.

An old Soviet iron or construction hair dryer. The iron thermostat is set to approximately 2.5 position. In addition, you will need a rag, a knife, fine sandpaper and a stand for fixing the parts.

You can also remove old edge tape using an iron. To do this, it is heated and pryed with a spatula or knife.
In this video you can see how to glue a 2 mm edge at home:

To achieve truly good result It’s still better to order factory edging. The overpayment will not be too large, but the durability will increase significantly. Now on sale you can find almost any color of tape to imitate wood or a plain version.
