Infusion of tomato leaves for use in the garden. Plant tops as fertilizer, is it possible and how to apply it correctly?

Medicinal infusions

Plants need protection from pests and diseases almost every year, but this can and should be done as environmentally friendly as possible. I believe that those who live in the city, especially weekend gardeners, often need ready-made preparations, while those who constantly live near the site more possibilities for the use of local folk remedies, for example, herbal infusions.

It should be borne in mind that the use of chemical pesticides is considered permissible only when the population significantly exceeds pest, the so-called economic thresholds of harmfulness, in other words, economically tangible numbers. These indicators exist for many crops, but, unfortunately, few are published for the general public.

Since vegetable growing usually begins in March, now we will talk about protecting vegetable crops. For example, let's give economic thresholds for the harmfulness of cabbage pests.

Biological methods of protecting gardens and vegetable gardens from pests

May 27, 2014 Natalia

During the period of mass activity of insect pests, we can disorient them with the help of odors that interrupt the attractive smell of the plants that we want to protect. To do this, you need to spray the plants with various herbal infusions or plant them among vegetables and berry crops spicy herbs and fragrant flowers.

We imprison allies

Fragrant herbs, releasing essential oils, confuse insects. Sow parsley, anise, dill, coriander, basil, lemon balm, sage, marjoram, tarragon, and thyme in the garden and vegetable garden.

Their phytoncides are destructive to pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Plant low growing marigolds(Chernobryvtsy) next to gladioli. This will protect the bulbs from damage by nematodes. If the soil is infected with nematodes, plant chicory, calendula, and nasturtium among the vegetables.

Their roots, like those of marigolds, secrete substances that are unpleasant to nematodes. At the end of the season, marigolds should be chopped and incorporated into the soil. This will repel nematodes and mole crickets. Do not weed out self-sown dill from the beds, leave a few umbrellas.

It repels the carrot fly and attracts beneficial insects. It is worth planting onion sets next to the asters. With such a neighborhood, asters will not get sick and will delight you with abundant flowering.

Infusions

To repel pests, spray the plants with a two-week infusion or decoction of fermented weeds. Before spraying, the infusion is filtered, diluted with water 1:5 and used. Since the smell disappears, spraying should be done at least once a week.

Nicotine to the rescue

spraying with tobacco infusion - photo Tobacco infusion is very effective against aphids, copperheads, thrips, sawflies, leaf roller caterpillars, and pea moths. And he prepares like this:

  • pour 1 kg of tobacco or tobacco waste with 10 liters of water; cook for 2 hours over low heat in a saucepan with a tight lid.

Let it brew for 3 days, strain. Add 2 liters of infusion to 8 liters of water, add 40 grams of grated laundry soap into the solution and spray. If trees are heavily infested with these pests, fumigating the garden with tobacco smoke is used.

To do this, spread a film or tarpaulin under the tree. An old bucket is filled 3/4 full with hot coals, 0.5 kg of tobacco dust is poured on top and placed under a tree. The fallen insects are collected and burned.

Fumigation can be carried out in calm, windless weather, preferably in the morning, when there is dew.

Other infusions that may help:

  • We use an infusion of garlic, as well as an infusion of onion peels, against leaf-sucking and leaf-eating insects; An infusion of pine needles will help fight aphids, codling moths, and strawberry-raspberry weevils; We use an infusion of citrus peels against leaf-sucking insects. Garden strawberries It is not recommended to process them. Infusions of tansy, nettle, dandelion, marigold, marigold, wormwood, yarrow, potato and tomato tops are against any leaf-sucking and leaf-gnawing insects.

Tomatoes will build fences against pests for us

Infusion of potato tops to combat ticks. photo As mentioned above, tomato tops will help against many pests. It will help in the fight against caterpillars, codling moths, leaf eaters, aphids, moths, sawflies, which attack currant bushes, roses and gooseberries. First, prepare a decoction: take 4-5 kg of fresh tops (leaves, stepsons, roots) or 2 kg of tops dry, add 10 liters of water and cook for half an hour.

Let it sit and cool. We filter. Before spraying, dilute with water 1:3, add grated laundry soap(approximately 40 grams per 10 liters).

Fight against cruciferous flea beetle without chemicals

The cruciferous flea beetle is a ubiquitous small jumping scoundrel that is black in color with a silvery tint. She attacks first, because she loves to feast on young leaves cabbage seedlings, and especially loves Chinese cabbage.

Since the flea eats three times its own weight per day, its presence is immediately noticeable: the cabbage leaves are covered with small holes. If nothing is done, soon all that remains of the leaf will be veins, and then it will die.

What helps against cruciferous flea flea

Method one. If you have a lot of non-woven covering fabric, then you can do it simply: cover the plantings of young cabbage. Access to the bed for the cruciferous flea beetle will be closed.

After some time, the seedlings will get stronger, their leaves will become coarser and lose their attractiveness to the pest, and the covering can be removed. Method two.

It is good to sprinkle newly planted cabbage seedlings with ash or a mixture of ash and tobacco dust in equal proportions. The disadvantage of this method is that every time after watering, rain or fog you will have to renew the ash spray. Method three.

At the beginning summer season plant spring garlic in the cabbage bed. When garlic shoots appear, plant cabbage seedlings next to them. The smell of garlic will confuse the cruciferous flea beetle, and it will avoid the garden bed. Method four.

The cruciferous flea's dislike for strong odors can play into our hands. Add fir oil to the water for irrigation (10-15 drops per bucket), and to be sure, at first cover the young cabbage plants with the tops of plastic bottles. Method five.

Spray the plant with a weak infusion of chicken manure. It will not only help against fleas, but will also serve as a nitrogen fertilizer for cabbage. The leaves will get stronger and grow faster, and the flea will not be afraid of them.

How to get rid of cabbage caterpillars and cabbage cutworms

Everyone knows the cabbage butterfly or cabbage white butterfly by sight. A white butterfly with a black border on its wings lays eggs on the underside of a cabbage leaf, from which yellowish caterpillars with black spots hatch.

These “voracious bellies” then eat our cabbage. The cabbage cutworm is a less noticeable gray butterfly, similar to a night moth, but its larvae can often be found inside cabbage heads. Small green caterpillars can seriously compete with the white butterfly in the fight for a juicy leaf.

How to treat cabbage against caterpillars

Method one. If you have wasps on your property, make them useful. Dissolve old jam, compote or just sugar and sprinkle the cabbage with sweet water.

The smell will undoubtedly attract wasps, great hunters of sweets, to the cabbage patch. Wasps feed their offspring with caterpillars, so they will not miss the opportunity to “clean” cabbage from them. Method two.

Pour 2 cups of ash and a tablespoon of liquid soap (even better than tar shampoo) with 10 liters of water and leave for 24 hours. Then spray the cabbage with the infusion. Method three.

As soon as you start to notice cabbage bugs flying around, place sticks with eggshells hanging on them around the cabbage bed. They say that butterflies mistake the shell for their own kind and do not lay eggs in places that are already “occupied.” Method four.

Prepare an infusion of tomato tops or onion peels. It's simple folk remedy will scare away butterflies with an unusual smell. A liter jar of onion peels should be filled with two liters hot water and leave for two days.

Then bring the volume of the infusion to four liters, add a tablespoon of liquid soap. To prepare tomato infusion, 1.5-2 kilograms of tops or shoots are poured with 5 liters of hot water and infused for 3-4 hours. Then boil for another 3 hours, after which it is filtered and diluted with water in a ratio of 1:2.

For better adhesion of the infusion, 20-30 grams of laundry or tar soap are also added to it before spraying. Method five. Sprinkle the cabbage leaves with regular baking soda.

Caterpillars cannot tolerate it, but it does no harm to plants.

Folk remedies against slugs and snails

Slugs and snails are unnoticed night hunters of our cabbage. During the day they hide in secluded, dark and damp corners of the plot, and in the evening they crawl out into the cabbage beds and eat, eat, eat... In the morning, all the cabbage leaves are in uneven holes, and no one is visible - the slugs are hiding.

What to do in this case? Method one. The good old folk method of fighting slugs is using bait.

To do this, in the evening (at 20-21 hours), when the slugs begin to emerge from their shelters, trays of kvass, juice, beer or diluted jam with yeast are placed next to the cabbage bed. You can soak old rags or burdock leaves in the “drink” and spread them along the furrows.

All night long the slugs will crawl towards the smell, and in the morning you can pick up the pests with your bare hands. Method two. Sprinkle mustard powder between the cabbages.

Slugs can't stand it. Method three. Prepare a solution of 40 ml. ammonia for 5-6 liters of water and pour from a watering can directly over the leaves and heads of cabbage.

After a few minutes, return to the garden bed and repeat the procedure: by this point, all the slugs will crawl out of the ground and out of the cabbage, and the ammonia solution will “hit the enemy directly.” Method four. Pick and place nettle leaves and stems around the garden bed.

Slugs will not climb the nettles to your cabbage. True, it dries out quickly, so the nettle protection needs to be renewed every day, but this is more of a plus than a minus, because you are simultaneously fighting slugs and mulching the plantings with excellent organic material.

Method five. Crushed eggshells scattered around the cabbage will become an insurmountable obstacle for the shellfish. But where can you get so many shells?

Save all winter! Read here what else to save in winter to later use at the dacha: http://dachnye-sovety.ru/chto-zapasat-zimoj-dlya-dachi/ Method six. Spray the soil in the cabbage bed with hot pepper infusion.

To prepare it, you need to grind 100 grams of pepper, add a liter of water and leave for two days. Then bring to a boil and leave for another day. Then squeeze out the pepper and strain the infusion.

Half a glass of pepper infusion is diluted in a bucket of water and, as usual, a spoonful of liquid soap is added before spraying. The remaining concentrate can be stored in a tightly sealed container in a dark and cool place.

We destroy the larvae of cutworms, chafers and cabbage flies

The larvae of the May beetle, winter armyworm or cabbage fly are called underground pests of cabbage, since they destroy not the leaves, but the roots during the period of cabbage formation. The result of their work is always obvious: the plant instantly withers, withers and dies. To combat the larvae, you can attract garden ants to the garden bed.

They, like wasps, crawl towards sweets, so it makes sense to bury a jar of jam diluted in water next to the withered bush. Black ants will react to the bait and, at the same time, will find the larvae, which are their natural, familiar food.

How to deal with cabbage aphids

The green cabbage aphid usually attacks young plants. Black dots appear on them, leaves curl. If the aphids are not destroyed, the plant will soon die.

Measures to combat cabbage aphids:

Method one. Spraying with infusion tomato tops, prepared in the same way as when fighting caterpillars. Method two. Treat the plants with soapy water (300-400 grams of soap per 10 liters of water), repeat the procedure after a week. Method three.

Spray the cabbage with a complex infusion against aphids. To prepare it, pour a glass of ash, a glass of tobacco dust, a tablespoon of mustard and a tablespoon of liquid soap into 10 liters of hot water and leave for 24 hours. Then strain and use on the pest.

Universal methods for controlling cabbage pests

Almost all cabbage pests are not happy with the smell herbs, That's why The best way to get rid of them - plant dill, carrots, parsley or celery seeds, mint, rosemary, sage, basil or cilantro next to the cabbage. The smells of these herbs and seeds will repel slugs, fleas, butterflies and aphids, but will attract their natural enemies - ladybugs, ichneumon beetle, lacewing. In addition to herbs and vegetables, flowers can also help in the fight against cabbage pests.

Place beds with marigolds or pyrethrum next to the cabbage beds, plant one nasturtium flower between the cabbage beds. Cutworms, cabbageweeds, and aphids will forget the way to your plot. If you are already late with planting “fragrant helpers”, and pests are attacking, use a universal recipe for a decoction that is not to the taste of almost all enemies of the garden: chop 700 grams of unpeeled garlic bulbs, scald with 10 liters of boiling water and boil for 2-3 hours. Then strain, dilute with water (1:1) and water your beds. We wish you success and big harvests!

Save so you don't lose!
Or rather, it is possible, but with a caveat - the tops of nightshades do not decompose for a year, or even two, and there is a risk of contamination of the compost with late blight spores. To protect your plantings, you can use compost from tomato and potato tops after at least three seasons - during this time the deadly fungus will die.
You understand that sometimes the game is not worth the candle - waiting three years for 5 buckets of compost. And in the fall there are a lot of tomato tops - it will soon be cold, the bushes will have to be gotten rid of. And if there are not so many potato tops (they will mostly all turn yellow by the time the harvest is dug up), then there will be a lot of tomato tops. The question is - where to put it?
In fact, there are many options. I’ll tell you separately what to do with tomato and potato tops.
Tomatoes
· Few people know, but good green tops from tomatoes are an excellent antiseptic. It can be placed in cesspool country toilet- and - get rid of unpleasant “odors” emanating from the building for a long time.
· Another principle follows from the same principle - tomato tops contain salonin, and this is a poison for many pests. Prepare a poisonous tincture and do preventive spraying of bushes and garden trees against pests. Aphids, codling moths, ants, moths, carrot and onion flies, caterpillars - all these “living creatures” cannot withstand poisonous sprays. The decoction is prepared as follows: 4 kg of raw materials are poured with 10 liters of water and boiled for half an hour. After this, the broth is filtered, diluted with water 1:4 and 40 grams of liquid soap are added to the infusion. The most convenient thing is that this infusion can be stored for up to 6 months - you can even use it next year, in the spring.
· Tomato tops can be chopped and embedded in the soil for the winter. This should only be done with healthy, disease-free plant stems and leaves. For the future: in the summer, after the pinching procedure, tomato stems can be used to make “mash” - a green fertilizer rich in nitrogen.
· Don't know what to do with tomato tops? Burn her! Yes, yes, ash from tomato tops is no worse than wood ash. And you can store it for as long as you like. Well, every self-respecting gardener knows what to do with such ash.
· Tomato tops can be used as mulch and protection against rodents for young plants fruit trees and bushes. Mice and other pests do not like the taste and smell of tomato tops.
Potato
· Basically, everything is the same as with tomatoes. Ash from potato greens is no less useful than ash from tomato tops.
· Compost. Let me make a reservation once again: yes, you can make compost from potato tops, but you should use the finished product no earlier than three years after putting it in a compost bin. For potato and tomato greens, we allocate a separate storage place, sprinkle the tops with soil and spill each layer with a solution copper sulfate(2-3 tbsp per bucket of water) – for disinfection against late blight.
· Poisonous extract from potato tops is no less effective than from tomato leaves. We take healthy (!) potato tops; for 600 grams of fresh tops you will need 5 liters of water. Let it sit for 5 hours and strain. Before spraying, add laundry soap to the solution. The extract from potato tops does not accumulate in the fruits - you can eat the fruits without fear.

The classification of tomato varieties into early, mid-ripening and late completely ignores scientific fact- tomato refers to perennial plants. Over the course of several years, the bush absorbs nutrients and microelements, each summer season throws out color and bears fruit. A sufficient number of seeds for reproduction is formed.

Gardeners are of secondary interest in these seeds. Ground tomatoes are valued for taste qualities and productivity. A competent feeding regime allows a tomato to go through the entire development cycle in 1 season. Our task is to provide the bush with all the necessary substances in a form accessible to the plant.

For active growth and fruiting, tomatoes need nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and other trace elements. All these substances are contained in the green mass of surrounding plants, the same weeds and wild grasses. Using vegetation for preparing fertilizers has many advantages:

  1. This is an inexhaustible source of free fertilizers.
  2. Tomatoes receive nitrogen nutrition in an easily digestible form.
  3. The problem of “what to do with the weeded weeds” no longer exists.

Even such natural “green” fertilizers should not be used uncontrollably on the garden bed. The smell of methane, a by-product of fermentation processes, is not the biggest nuisance. A high concentration of the active substance - herbal tea - can cause a chemical burn to the roots and leaves of tomatoes and destroy the garden bed.

How to prepare herbal infusion?

The recipe for the herbal infusion does not provide for particularly precise proportions. Any plastic container (barrel, tank) is suitable for fermentation. It is not advisable to use metal containers - the caustic solution will quickly rust them.

Basic recipe for liquid green fertilizer:

  1. The barrel is filled with grass and weeds to ⅔ of its volume. Chop the plants coarsely. A mandatory requirement for weeds is the absence of buds.
  2. Do not pour water to the very top - 5-10 cm to the edges: the solution will ferment and foam.
  3. Cover the top with film and tie. Anaerobic bacteria process plant residues much faster without access to fresh air.
  4. Periodically, the film should be removed and the solution mixed.
  5. When fermentation stops (the solution stops foaming), the herbal dressing is ready. Usually, at a temperature of 20-25°C degrees, the process is completed in 2 weeks.

Helpful advice: experienced gardeners Nettles, dandelions, wormwood, chamomile, wild mustard, celandine, clover, vetch and other legumes are recommended for preparing herbal fertilizer. Nettles and dandelions contain a lot of microelements necessary to increase the yield of tomatoes.

Completely unsuitable for processing into green fertilizer:

To enrich the elemental composition of the fertilizer and increase the efficiency of the fertilizer, various additives are added to the base composition (per barrel with a capacity of 200 liters).

Supplement Options What does it give How and how much to add
Ash Enriches with phosphorus, potassium, calcium and other trace elements 1 bucket per barrel
Manure or bird droppings
  • It enriches, first of all, with nitrogen and microelements - only bird droppings.
  • Enhances fermentation processes
Manure - ½ bucket

(litter ¼ bucket).

Old candied jam Fermentation fungi and bacteria feed on sugar ½ l
(the quantity is not important)
Pressed yeast or EM Catalyst for fermentation process, enrichment with microelements yeast 500-1000 g
EM drugs Effective microorganisms accelerate the processing of green mass into nutrients available to plants by 2-3 times 1 l

Whenever possible, compressed live baker's yeast is replaced with a solution of effective microorganisms. EOs not only stimulate fermentation. Once in the garden bed, they restore the natural microflora of the fertile layer, which promotes the growth of tomatoes.

How to properly feed tomatoes with herbal infusion

Green liquid fertilizer is ready when fermentation has stopped. The green mass sinks to the bottom, and there is no need to filter anything. The finished fertilizer from the barrel must be diluted with water in the following ratio:

  • 1:10 - for root feeding;
  • 1:20 - for foliar feeding.

A simple rule to remember

Tomatoes are fertilized with the appearance of each new flower cluster. IN Middle lane Determinate tomato bushes usually bear fruit on 3 bunches.

These 3 root dressings a solution of herbal fertilizer, to enhance the effect, can be alternated with foliar fertilizers of the same composition, 2 times less concentrated. Foliar feeding, like any spraying, is carried out in the morning or evening to prevent sunburn.

How to water with herbal infusion

The concentrate diluted 1:10 with water is used for root feeding. Approximately 1 liter of nutrient solution is given for each bush.

Mandatory sequence of operations:

  • watering a tomato bush;
  • fertilizing with green fertilizer;
  • watering again;
  • loosening with hilling.

How to cook universal fertilizer With cow dung and grass, you can watch in the video.

Tomato tops - their properties and use as fertilizer

Tomato tops in large quantities contains solanine. This toxic substance is produced by all nightshade plants. This poison is present in concentrations that are not dangerous to humans even in unripe tomato fruits. Taking this into account, to prepare liquid fertilizer It is not recommended to use tops. Harmless and unusually effective from the point of view of preparing fertilizer, weeds grow in unlimited quantities.

Interesting fact: Beds planted with tomatoes do not suffer from aphid infestation.

Solanine, in addition to its toxic effect, inhibits the development of fungi and other pathogenic organisms. A toxic alkaloid from the green part of a tomato bush was found practical use on personal plot. Green parts of a tomato bush, without signs of disease, can be used to combat garden pests and diseases vegetable plants. They can be dried and stored for future use; the 100% effect lasts for a year.

To prepare herbal liquid fertilizers, tomato tops can be used as an additive - no more than ¼ of the total green mass. Such feeding will have a preventive effect against the main insect pests of the garden and vegetable garden.

After autumn cleaning of the beds, it is not advisable to place tomato tops in a general compost heap. Solanine slows down the processes of natural decomposition of plant residues. Poisonous properties The green part of tomato bushes is effectively used to protect berry fields. Placed under currant and gooseberry bushes, they effectively protect against pests, especially moths.

The insecticidal use of tops has found the greatest popularity. A decoction of tops that is safe for humans is available to all gardeners. The effectiveness of the product is inferior to pesticides; it is recommended for minor damage to the garden bed or for prevention. Aphids, bugs, spider mites, leaf-eating caterpillars - these insects are afraid of a decoction of fresh or dried tomato leaves.

Recipe for 1 bucket of water:

  • 4 kg of chopped tops;
  • boil for half an hour under the lid;
  • cool;
  • For use, dilute with water 1:4.

In a sealed container, the effectiveness of the concentrate remains for up to six months. Application is not limited to vegetables in the garden: garden trees, berry gardens, houseplants are also susceptible to insect attacks.

The use of liquid herbal fertilizers is gaining popularity. Even an inexperienced summer resident can prepare a safe and highly effective fertilizer in 10-14 days, the free components for which grow in abundance.

Nature intended that some plants help others cope with serious illnesses caused by improper care, unfavorable weather conditions or an invasion of voracious insects.

Savior plants secrete so-called phytoncides, substances that can destroy microorganisms and uninvited insects. The recipes for their preparation were known to our ancestors, but, unfortunately, not all of them have survived to this day. Among them there are those that gardeners like because their use brings benefits and obvious results. They allow you to obtain environmentally friendly products, which cannot be said about other plant protection products. One of these effective “herbal” recipes is an infusion of tomato leaves and tops.

Let's look at the secret of the popularity of this product and how to prepare it correctly.
